Was driving to a movie when I heard The Scorpions cover (1989) of "I Can't Explain" by The Who released the song originally on January 15th, 1965. Great cover! Thought this would be a fun thread of us posting our favorite covers. Here are a few I pulled off my iPod...

Styx - "I Am the Walrus" - Beatles (1967), Styx (2004)

Van Halen - "You Really Got Me" - Kinks (1964), VH - (1978)

David Bowie - "Across The Universe" (1975) - Beatles - (1968)

Metallica - Entire Garage Inc. CD (1998) - Most notably for me - "Whiskey in a Jar" - Dubliners (1960's) later done by Thin Lizzy (1973) and "Astronomy" - Blue Oyster Cult (1974)

Cake - "I Will Survive" (1996) - Gloria Gaynor - (1976)

Elton John - "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" (1974) - Beatles (1967)

and of course - "Summertime Blues" by Rush (2004) - Eddie Cochran - 1958. Later by The Who (1970)

List goes on of course -

Please post your favorite cover song - Original band (year) and coverband (year).

I know it's blasphemy to his fans and all but... I love My Chemical Romance's reworking of Bob Dylan's "Desolation Row" that they did for the Watchmen soundtrack. And yes, I've heard both versions. (But they're not great at covering everyone - their cover of "Astro Zombies" by the Misfits is less than stellar.)

Green Day's cover of "A Quick One While He's Away" that they did as a bonus track for 21st Century Breakdown was pretty good, too.

I also prefer the Scorpion's version of "I Can't Explain" to the Who's.

I like Pat Benatar's version of "Wuthering Heights" over Kate Bush's original.

Metallica's "Stone Cold Crazy" is equal to Queen's.

I'm sure there's more, but I can't think of them right now. Later!

I will agree with others on Hendrix - Watchtower and Cream - Crossroads

I'll add some Allman Brothers (because half of their songs in the Duane era were blues covers) - take your pick between:

Statesboro Blues - Blind Willy McTell

Stormy Monday - TBone Walker

You Don't Love Me - Willie Cobbs

Mountain Jam - Donnovan

I don't know who did the original, but Pat Benatar's cover of "You Better Run" is smokin' better.

Also:

Siouxsie and the Banshees version of "You're Lost Little Girl" (1987) over the Doors' original

one of my all time faves is Spocks Beard version of George Harrisons

Beware Of Darkness

Neal is probably my all time favorite vocalists.

Spock's Beard also has a great cover of Yes's "South Side of the Sky" (with a "Perpetual Change" intro)

I have it on my itunes but cannot find it anywhere on the net.
