  1. ahhh glad to see Mr. Devin Townsend on that list. anyone ever hear his cover of Natural Science? its crazy.
  2. based on recent Rush album length trends.....i voted "Epic concept length"
  3. what?! John Lennon is totally alive and well, he plays drums for a band called The National http://www.chartattack.com/files/imagecache/content_image-680xauto/chart_global/photos/2010/08/13/1281718117/100625_national01_clm.jpg
  4. check out these teasers.... The first one seems a bit cheesy to me, probably because the "choir" voices are definitely done on a synth....i think if hes going to do ambient music he should just go pure noise like some of the stuff on Insurgentes... As for the second one....AMAZING. the guy knows how to write a damn good acoustic song. gotta love it. GET EXCITED.
  5. yeah, i was there...they were pretty off especially during YYZ that night
  6. im just amazed that they are "considering" headlining one of the biggest British music festivals......imagine being that HUGE. amazing.
  7. QUOTE (MCM @ May 16 2011, 07:14 PM) I think it's generally accepted that "newer" music is "hotter" than "older" music. (first example I can think of is the first Everclear album, I think it's a muddy mess, the same as VT) So, does this mean that the younger listener might be more accepting of that type of mix as opposed to an older listener who may have grown up spinning albums that were recorded using analog. Is there an age line here for those who think that VT is fine and those who think that VT is sonically bad? Just my rambling thoughts of course.. do they make sense to anyone else? you really might be onto something there.....young people like myself are just used to bad mixes and in turn, we think they are good.
  8. QUOTE (Cosy Toes @ May 16 2011, 06:34 PM) VT = Shit Sandwich. That's just the way it is. Some things will never change. http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_YSj9VerPFmY/SfZvUJGyv2I/AAAAAAAABqc/unIDBW2bSUk/s400/sharksandwich0gy.jpg i disagree
  9. QUOTE (Rushman14 @ May 16 2011, 06:30 PM) QUOTE (pedro2112 @ May 16 2011, 04:03 PM) QUOTE (Wilderness_of_Mirrors @ May 16 2011, 11:55 AM) Every song is just so hard hitting, but in an honest way....not like "Far Cry" where you can tell they said "this will be the HEAVY RIFF PART".....no this stuff came from the heart......the lyrics are incredible, geddy's voice is incredible, and of the musicianship is incredible. Except you are wrong. Far cry is much more honest, and significantly better than ANYTHING on VT. Sorry. you forgot yeah....so did i. this whole thread is IMO
  10. QUOTE (Tarkus406 @ May 16 2011, 04:42 PM) I love the music on Vapor Trails...I really do. But the production just ruins it and makes it unlistenable to me. That's just me. If you like the crunchy raw distortion, go for it. As long as Rush releases a remix and cleans it up and CASTRATES THE ALBUM as you folks say..., I am friggen happy I like the remaster for Earthshine a lot....but for One Little Victory it just sounds too digital....thats just me. I honestly dont know if i will enjoy the remaster as much as the original mix, and I am a sucker for great production work. I guess for me, in its own respect, Vapor Trails is great production work, even if it is unintentionally noisy or whatever. I listen to a lot of Shoegaze and pure noise music, so maybe thats why I like it....its like Rush incorporating noise into their music....accidentally...
  11. QUOTE (GeddyRulz @ May 16 2011, 03:59 PM) Thank to the OP for pointing out the layering as a good thing; many fans hate it, but not me. Best example: listen to the beginning of "Ceiling Unlimited" on headphones. It's like: guitar enters, bass enters, another guitar enters, first guitar exits, etc. Everything, even counter-melodies, sits atop each other so seemlessly, and you can hear new stuff the 20th time you've listened to it. I loved VT from the first listen. Very different for Rush - kind of "artsy" and yet hard-rocking at the same time. yes, glad to see you had the same admiration for that.... i also always loved the chorus (is it the chorus?) of Freeze, with that bizarre unrecognizable guitar thing over the bass chords....you can always catch something new in that song..... Im even a fan of the Geddy Lee Choral Experience stuff on the album, especially on Earthshine....its just such an intricate idea.... and it really is the most artsy Rush album IMO, the only one that is really a typical Rush song is One Little Victory and thats my least favorite. QUOTE Well, it's the raw sounds that make it cool for me. And it's not even that bad. Maybe it's just my young ears? i agree with you. I would rather have those raw guitar tones that Alex just plays on a whim than a synth sweep or something supposedly "atmospheric", its more spontaneous and personal...
  12. It was approximately 3 A.M. last night and i could not sleep, I had this uneasy, almost "creeped out" feeling for most of the night for no particular reason...I guess it had just been an odd day......So to help rest my eyes I put on my Sennheisers and scanned around the "Artists" for a few minutes on the ol' iPod....I clicked Rush, since it really had been a while since listening to a Rush album all the way through.... now before I continue, I'd just like all of you to know that I have always been a fan of Vapor Trails.....In fact, I had always considered it one of their best albums.... .....and something was telling me to click on Vapor Trails, maybe it was that great fireball album art thing....but regardless, I chose to listen. I had never had such a beautiful, surreal, relatable, moving listeniing experience in my life. Every song is just so hard hitting, but in an honest way....not like "Far Cry" where you can tell they said "this will be the HEAVY RIFF PART".....no this stuff came from the heart......the lyrics are incredible, geddy's voice is incredible, and of the musicianship is incredible. but what really gets me about these songs is the arrangements, and the layering...there are so many nuances on this album that i could only hope for on Clockwork Angels, but i fear it was a one time thing. listen to the title track.....after the "solo" section, which is really just a beautiful open sounding guitar melody part....which made me feel like i was floating into the sun....there is a beautiful bridge section full of effected guitar riffs which just make it completely immersing and surreal.....the "Dream of a peacable kingdom" part in...well....Peacable Kingdom, with that infectious bassline, has this beautiful echoey guitar riff where the notes dont seem to matter....just the sound...and the chorus in The Stars Look Down.....it just captures that sense of not knowing what to do, and it is beautifully sung. one final thing....on the infamous topic of the production value....i almost feel like the clipping and the disorienting sound adds to the quality of the songs. you have to listen intently to dig out those hidden layers, which are breath taking. every time i listen to the album i hear a new sound, a new guitar part, a new effect...the amount of time the band spent on making these songs so rich is evident in the final product. granted, not every sound is "perfectly clear", but what is wrong with appreciating the beauty of a distorted noise instead of focusing on the actual notes being played. Ok Im done.....just thought I share this....its actually pretty inexplicable as to why I wrote this essay and posted it here....but I felt the need.
  13. QUOTE (Enemy Within 77 @ Apr 29 2011, 12:32 AM) Boris is really about it for me. Anyone else know them? HUGE BORIS FAN!!!! i guess since im pretty into Noise Rock and Shoegaze... but i saw someone mentioned Mono, theyre also great if youre into Post Rock which is a bit dramatic sometimes.......but so is Prog

  17. so last night was my 6th Rush show, and by far the most intense and exciting show i have ever been to. i took my girlfriend, who used to basically hate rush, to the show and she really gets it. the unexplainable chills that certain songs induce, the energy of the crowd....she not only understands my obsession, but she is now developing her own. i have to marry this girl haha. as for the performance, the only error was in the opening video...it stopped suddenly like 75% through then started over but the sound was INCREDIBLE, the band was SO tight...it was unreal. Geddy's bass solo in Leave That Thing Alone was blistering but yet funky and beyond impressive. neils fills were spot on, he played exceptionally well, and Alex was totally in the zone....he really ripped through the solo in working man, i have never seen him play like that. The Camera Eye definitely takes the cake for me though, i had chills the entire time...it sounded SO epic....i almost cried.
  18. QUOTE (ghostworks @ Feb 20 2011, 12:00 AM) as a pretty serious Radiohead fan, I gotta say I'm not impressed so far the album as a whole sounds like a fairly well-produced demo, especially the simple, uninspired drum loops that populate most of the songs that said, I find 'Codex' and 'Separator' almost perfect as they are - they're the two I've returned to most to date ('Lotus Flower' isn't a half-bad 'demo' either) this would be an interesting free download if it were, say, Thom's original demos for a proper album this simply cant be the best they can come up with in four years. i remember the first time i heard In Rainbows i was AMAZED, not bored.
  19. ive only really listened to Neu, Can, Popul Vuh and a little bit of Faust..... but i really love it...ill check out some of those "essentials" though
