I hate the lyrics to Second Nature and Lock and Key, and find High Water and Tai Shan boring. The guitar is a little thin in places but I actually like the synths on this album. Fridge Posted September 8, 2008 Share Posted September 8, 2008 Their last great album. Absolutely blinding in parts with poignant and often wickedly sharp observational lyrics. Open Secrets is devastating and makes for uncomfortable listening for anyone who has had relationship difficulties (in a good way if that makes any sense). Ok, the last two tracks are pretty much filler, and I'm not crazy about Force 10 but the rest of it is so good that these can be overlooked. I usually do skip Tai Shan, but I do like High Water. HYF brings back some great memories - we used to play it constantly when we were out on the lake, back when we had the cabin cruiser. Just cruising along at low speed, Dad at the controls, and me & 2 or three friends stretched out on the bow sunning ourselves to the glorious sounds of Rush. Prime Mover is in my top 3 all time. Funny sort of side-story to HYF: I worked with an individual back when HYF was released that was a bit "touched" or perhaps "troubled" psychologically (I dont know what his real story was) but in any event, he was a Rush fan. I encouraged him to pick up HYF. he did. He then insisted that Rush had written the entire album about HIM...and proceeded to spend days citing examples in the lyrics on HYF that illustrated what Rush was saying about HIM. I went to the mall early that day and it wasn't in the bin yet. So I went to lunch and went back later. I was so excited! That brilliant red cover stood out among all the other Rush covers. I mean, you couldn't miss it. I turned the album over and saw that there were 10 songs on it as opposed to the usual 8 songs. WRDU, our local (now defunct) hard rock and classic rock station premiered "Force Ten", "Time Stand Still", "Mission", and "Turn the Page" two weeks prior to the release in order to promote it. Those were the days. I remember hearing "Time Stand Still" on the radio first and wondering who the female vocalist was and thinking it could have been Suzanne Vega. The voice was too whispery to be recognizable. I also remember loving all 4 tunes before buying the album and knowing that I would love the entire thing. I love HYF, it's my second favorite Rush album after Power Windows. The lyrics are some of my favorite, especially on Lock and Key, Mission, Force Ten, and Time Stand Still. Geddy's bass lines are awesome on the album and Alex has some killer solos. So far the main complaints I've seen for HYF are mostly from the guitar snobs who whine that there's too much synth. That's what give HYF such a great sound, the synth adds an extra layer that gives the songs more depth than they would have if there was just guitar. Also, someone mentioned they avoided buying the album because of all the bad things people said about it. The reverse is also true, I bought Counterparts because I had heard so many good things about it and how it was supposed to be one of the best Rush albums ever. Those people couldn't have been more wrong. Counterparts still remains the album collecting the most dust in my CD collection. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Great album (imo) mostly because it was the first Rush album I bought as it was released. Had spent the previous 6 months wearing out tapes of GuP and PW as new listener. HYF also had the distinction of being the first CD I ever purchased and (now that I think about it) the entire reason I bought a CD player! I just love this forum! I don't post very often (don't figure anyone really cares what my opinion on any topic may be), but I read daily. The spectrum spanning opinions make for great reading! Oh......for the record......I absolutely love HYF! Open Secrets, Turn the Page and Second Nature (oh, and Prime Mover).....all memorable classics in my life's timeline! .....end of transmission...... I went through a long period where the mid-80s through early-90s albums just weren't reaching me. That time has passed.
