So my 8 year old shows me her spelling sentences for homework. She's supposed to think up her own sentences, independently, for each of her weekly spelling words then write the sentence.

 

Her word is Hot. What's the sentence?

 

"I am a hot lover."

My wife comes walking in the kitchen to see my stunned look. I tell my 8 year old to read her the sentence.

It reminds me of one of my students that I teach english to. In passing I asked the guy (a typical university aged student whose english ability isn't that good), "What did you do over the weekend?" He says, "I ate... out... my girlfriend." I say, "Excuse me?" He replies, "Is.... sentence... wrong?" Half smiling I answer, "Maybe. Where did you go?" He answers, "We...went...Italian restaurant. After...she...went...home." Enlightened I say, "Ahhhh, I see. You should say, 'I ate out with my girlfriend'. 'With ' is very important." Bowing, he answers, "Thank you."
