There's a documentary about this (Yacht Rock) on Max or Showtime or somewhere and it's pretty good, imo. I don't care about labels (such as the prog label stuck to RUSH that isn't really accurate) and listen to the music I like. If someone thinks it's cheesy and "yacht rock", that's on them.

Seriously though don't like him.  Very knowledgeable dude but his old man yells at cloud shtick gets on my nerves.

That's what I don't like Beato either. He always bitches about how new music sucks yet he doesn't use his platform to help promote younger artists that he likes. Also, I still have no clue what this guy did in the music business and why I should care what he has to say in the first place.

People listen to what he says because he knows a shit-ton about music -- music theory, stage and recording gear, music production -- and he's very good at teaching it and making it easy to understand. He's also a very good interviewer, to the point where accomplished musicians who don't normally give long-form interviews will sit down with him because they know they're not going to be asked stupid questions and they're going to be allowed to give free and detailed answers without being interrupted.

Beato was a former college professor in music and former producer. He knows how music works. If you don't want to know the details on how songs work, you'll probably find it annoying or a little TMI. His approach is unique compared to the sea of music journalist zombies who only ask 'so...how did your band start?'

 

HIs rant is about the dumbing down of 70s music into a convenient box so the luddites can digest it. The luddites just want a playlist for their cocktail parties while the rest of us listen intently trying to figure out how these songs work. Yacht rock is the most repulsive, cringy term since Disco.
