I alays found Appetite a little to Gimmick-y and  desperate to shock.  Not that maiden isn't a bit of a gimmick well.  it's just......i dunno. Songs like It' so Easy.  It reerks of juvenile shock value that has not aged well.

"OOH WE JUST TOLD A BITCH TO BEND OVER........WE IS NAUGHTY BAAAAAAAAAAAAD"

give me a break, lol.

and sorry Rick Appetite better than any Maiden?  that's.......a thing you said i guess, lol

Mick

I never thought of Appetite as gimmicky at all. I don't think Axl wrote those kind of lyrics for shock. He wrote those kind of lyrics because he was a f***in prick 😄

I will always love their first three albums. They were one of my favorite bands at the time they released the Illusion albums. Saw them live with Metallica in 1992. So I pretty much saw both bands in their prime on the same night.

I've always found it to be standard. I just don't really love Slash's style, and the songs have never thrilled me beyond "this is fun", only to be forgotten a minute later.

Still, super talented musicians and I'd do anything to have bands like this be mainstream superstars in our time.

Honestly, don't hate me for this, but if there is any single US metal album to claim as greater than Maiden in the eighties...for me it would be Operation: Mindcrime.

ooooh slash is what i love about GnR, lol

And Operation Mindcrime?.........sigh...........whatever you say:rofl1:

OK granted.  still aged like old milk though, lol

I like GNR not here to bash.  they were a much needed jolt.  and people talk about Nirvana in that light (and you and i agree on them, lol)  But GNR was a kick in the ass as well that gets a bit overlooked in that discussion.

BTW...I LOVE the illusion albums way more than i do Appetite.

Well...its an established genre classic for a good reason bud 🤣

Eighties Queensryche is in the running for being my number one metal band of the era, alongside Maiden, Anthrax, Testament and...can't believe I'm saying this...Slayer.

It was! Faith No More opened. That was my first hard rock/metal show. They only problem was that this was the time where Axl didn't come on stage until he felt like it. So after Metallica finished it was over two hours before GnR hit the stage.

Okay but the album is one of my absolute faves so I see it as a classic as much as I do Rumours, White Album or Number Of The Beast

Appetite, as a self-contained album, is better than any single self-contained Maiden album.  Di'Anno's albums come closest.  Dickinson's albums always have a Quest for Fire or a Where Eagles Dare (a song that repeats a section 477 times ).

I think people get wrapped up in what a sh*tshow GNR became.  Appetite is a just a flawless hard rock album.

This thread motivated me to go back and spin UYI I and II today.  I love them as well.

I wouldn't go quite this far, but I see your point.

Barring the two Di'Anno  albums, Appetite is far superior to any full Maiden album that came thereafter. And I'm not really a GnR fan, though I am a Maiden one.

Appetite by it self eclipses all of Maiden. Imo.

Never connected with Maiden. I like a few of their instrumentals but I have always considered lyrics to not be my cup if tea

The problem I have with GNR is not so much the music, at this stage of my life, it is the vocals. :old::

But I have no problem running around the house yelling the vocal stylings of  Maiden's Trooper

Or Aces High.

Its going to be a Maiden day here at the house...not even finished having my coffee yet...
