Holy f***ing shit!  That is incredible.

I really like Mangini.  But Portnoy brings so much - DT wasn't the same without him.

Pumped.  This is great!

Looks like rotating set lists are back on the menu boys!

And maybe, just maybe, they will make that 5th Ytse Jam covers album. Which is sure to be them covering a Rush record.

I enjoyed the last couple albums with Mangini, but like so many others (especially those of us who were fans since the beginning), the band never felt or sounded quite the same when Portnoy was booted/departed.

Something to look forward to I suppose.  They're still not too old to put out a handful of albums before the inevitability of age takes it toll and winds things down for them.

If only there was an official Dream Theater thread to put this in 😄

I think this warrants its own thread honestly. But fair point.

anyway

I really agree with what Mick’s been saying in the DT thread. I mean… don’t get me wrong, this is a little extra impetuous for me to see them next time they come around… but I was really digging the Mangini era. I felt like he’d just come off of his best drumming work with them on AVFTTOTW

I feel a bit sorry for Mangini, I really liked his work with DT ...... but ......  Mikey boy returning to the fold is a big deal!

However now that he is back on board, I assume he will cut down his work with the ten million other bands he has been involved with!!

Oh certainly he’ll roll the knob off of other projects.

Look I’m interested to hear what they do…but frankly I’d just rather they stuck with Mangini.

Yeah from an outside perspective I can’t understand how Mangini’s so chill about this in his statement.

maybe i'm cynical but DT better be careful.

i really could Seee MP peace-ing out again at the slightest disagreement.

it's only cause we live this already, lol

Mangini breathed life into this band. I never cared for DT before he joined.

Portnoy is an OK drummer in this genre. He’s certainly a pioneer in this vein, but I think there are better versions out there for this type of prog music.

Distance Over Time, with Mangini, is their best album.

also i never liked much of what Portnoy did outside DT.

like yea he's important but he hasn't been that good in well over a decade, IMO.

It does seem a bit harsh to say the least.

I was speaking to a couple of drummer friends of mine this evening - both are well pissed off as

they reckon that Mangini is technically a much better player than Portnoy.

I can't really comment as I don't play drums myself.

He's taking it well, publicly anyway, made a big post on twitter I think.
