Eric Clapton - I Shot The Sheriff (Bob Marley and the Wailers cover)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0xLLPJ0bOw

That's certainly a well-known song of his, but I wouldn't say that's his most famous solo song, and certainly not the song with which he's most commonly associated.

Just curious, which song would you say he is most well known for?

Solo, probably After Midnight. Overall? Probably Layla or Sunshine of Your Love.

Some might say cocaine is his best known tune and cocaine is a cover tune

Totally forgot that one. That might be his best known solo tune.

Two other very popular songs (although I do not like either!) are

Wonderful Tonight - popular with the romantics, first song at the wedding etc.

Tears In Heaven - for the obvious sentimental reasons

I thought of both of those too. Some artists it can be tough to pinpoint just one song that's their "signature" song.

I think I just heard it too many times in a short period of time. Kinda made me want to avoid it.

These two songs were hits from The Bodyguard soundtrack.

Whitney Houston - I'm Every Woman (originally recorded by Chaka Khan and written by Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson)

The S.O.U.L. S.Y.S.T.E.M. - It's Gonna Be A Lovely Day (written and recorded by Bill Withers)

I don't know if this counts, but I'll put this out there.

Kenny Rogers - Lady (written by Lionel Richie and initially rejected by The Commodores)

Kenny Rogers and Sheena Easton - We've Got Tonite (Bob Seger cover)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7DYXWZPME4

Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton - Islands In The Stream (written by Barry, Robin & Maurice Gibb and later recorded by The BeeGees)

Those are all very well known songs from Kenny Rogers but I think The Gambler is probably his most famous one.

Now perhaps some controversy!

Lol

Do you think van halen falls in this category? You really got me has to be up there as one of their best known tunes.

Yeah. It has a snazzy intro in the form of eruption but I don't think eruption would of stood on it's own as a single.

The phasing from eruption into the really got me riffs is what makes the two songs better. Imo.

Michael Andrews featuring Gary Jules - Mad World (UK Christmas No.1 in 2003)

I discovered that cover version recently when Randy Bachman and his son Tal do this live stream each Friday and play cover songs on their acoustic guitars as a duo, along with answering submitted fan questions.

I've time stamped the episode where they play the song here.

Then after the episode ended, I found the cover version by Michael Andrews (feat. Gary Jules).

I wasn't aware that it was a Tears For Fears song until afterwards, because it didn't chart in North America.

I've been used to hearing 'Shout', 'Everybody Wants To Rule The World', 'Head Over Heels', and 'Sowing The Seeds Of Love' on the radio all these years.

In a way, the scenario is similar to how the European fans know Bachman-Turner Overdrive from 'You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet' because that song charted globally. Whereas the other hits by the band only charted in North America.

I remember my high school band teacher had made a mixed tape of songs featuring Bryan Adams, Paul Young, Cher, The Rolling Stones, Rod Stewart, and Led Zeppelin.

This cover by Cher was on the mixed tape, which was a huge hit for her decades later in the UK, from the original recorded by Betty Everett.

Linda Ronstadt recorded a few cover songs in the 70's and 80's that were top 10 and top 20 hits in North America.

Some examples below.

You're No Good (written by Clint Ballard, Jr.and then recorded by Betty Everett and The Swinging Blue Jeans)

When Will I Be Loved (written by Phil Everly and recorded by The Everly Brothers)

The Tracks of My Tears (written by Smokey Robinson and recorded by The Miracles and then Johnny Rivers had a top 10 hit with it)

That'll Be the Day (written and recorded by Buddy Holly and The Crickets)

Blue Bayou (written and recorded by Roy Orbison)

It's So Easy! (written and recorded by Buddy Holly and The Crickets)

Don't Know Much (with Aaron Neville, which was originally written and recorded by Barry Mann)

All My Life (with Aaron Neville, which was originally written and recorded by Karla Bonoff)
