Edit: Also, something happened on FB a couple of weeks ago. A post praising Rocky, that is suspected to have come from Neil.

 

These guys are talented. I agree with "Billy was born to do it". These guys may have emulated the sound (which is a positive), but they've got the chops to pull it off.

 

Also, keep in mind peeps, they rarely rehearse together. They each know the songs - those complicated shifting time changing songs - well enough on their own, that they are able to pull it together when they fly in from different places and play live.

 

You wouldn't know it by watching their live vids. Close your eyes, and it's 1977 all over again..almost.

 

Like I wrote above, I hope YYNOT's buzz gets cranked up to 11.

It's trendy because they are so popular. And they sound like Led Zepplein so freaking much LOL. But again I always say music and it's beauty is in the eye of the beholder. There is no definite yes or no.

 

Purely subjective.

 

If YYNOT were playing in my neck of the woods.....I absolutely would go see them live. Why? Like I said, they are a really good band. And watching them rip Rush covers would be fun because they play the songs really well and have nailed their sonic sound down really well.

 

The originals for me...not that great.

 

That's all. I hope they succeed. Music is a tough business as it is. And I am cool with any band that is influenced by great bands like Rush. I just think if your going to write originals......have an original sound. Not a carbon copy of your heroes.

THE SONIC REPRESENTATION IS A CARBON COPY OF ALEX LIFESON AND GEDDY LEE"S sound not song writing. They are using almost to a tee the sounds that come out of the amplifiers and the style of their playing to almost a tee.

 

I don't think Rush would ever write the songs they are writing. That is because Rush have written far far superior songs.

Finally playing the new album. (on spotify) Listen.......the playing is Rush to a tee (obviously) but the Vocals are pure pop and the lyrics and songwriting are NOWHERE NEAR Rush.

 

i actually really liked this album a lot. they are doing ENOUGH different to gain my fandom.

Sorry, when you said "sound" I took it to mean what they do overall. While I disagree that they've completely copied their sound I will give you that they take liberally from Rush's sonic character. But that fits with the stated purpose of the project. It's an homage. They're called YYNOT. IMO, they take that sound to a new place with brilliantly crafted and performed material. That's why I see them as artistically valid. Their work is transformative. But if the Rush sound is the problem you have going in then that's a bias that will always color how you feel about them. That's fine. These are opinions, after all. But I feel your commentary on Dream Theater also reveals a bias. You said they "truly have their own style and sound." I completely disagree. To me, they sound like hair metal with odd time sigs and pretentious lyrics. Europe without the hairspray. It would be difficult to come up with a more cliche sound than DT's.

 

It's true that YYNOT has not and likely never will surpass Rush's greatest works but I will say that a lot of New Rush songs are so bad they're unlistenable. But that's just my opinion. So far YYNOT have two albums in the win column, by my estimation. Thank god they haven't put out anything as bad as Snakes and Arrows.
