  3. This old-timer only sees Ozzy on stage with Tony, Geezer and Bill. The band was OK with Dio, but Ozzy gave the band a special mystique that couldn't be duplicated. :finbar:

  5. The Yukon Blade Grinder Christmas at the Huguenot Toronto 25 Dec 2013 by substancewithoutstyle, YBG flunky I should start off by saying that I dearly hope the header of this "article" is to Tombstone's satisfaction. He's become very finicky and demanding since my recruitment as a Grinder correspondent. He said he got tired of watching me sit on my ass all day gluing pasta shells together, and that he'd just as soon put me to work. Fortunately, he did give me Christmas Day off. Since I'm writing this on my rest day, and not in any official capacity, he really can't complain, can he? I managed to coax Lorraine into returning to Toronto for what everyone hopes is the home stretch of the Goober saga. I told her that it would be a shame for her to bail on us after everything we'd been through together, and nobody wants to be called a quitter, so she reluctantly agreed to put family obligations aside and promptly hopped a plane back to The Great White North. While Tombstone went to the airport to retrieve her, I set about looking for a Christmas tree, a task I'd neglected to do until this morning. As I drove along the motorway in our placid little suburb, I feared I'd have trouble finding an establishment to buy a tree on Christmas Day itself. My fears evaporated when I rounded a curve and saw a huge neon sign that read "Cliff's Christmas Conifers". While perusing the trees on offer, I noticed a very Santa-like figure seated at a card table in one corner of the lot. On closer inspection, he looked suspiciously familiar. Cliff's Christmas Conifers? Could it be? It was none other than Cliff Burnstein, the man largely responsible for signing Rush to their first record deal at Mercury Records. As you can imagine, I had a lot of questions for him, so below is a transcript of the juiciest bits of our conversation. ME: I thought you were the co-owner of Q Prime, the management company that represents Metallica, among others. What are you doing selling Christmas trees, of all things? CB: My business partner, Pete, does most of the heavy-lifting there, and I needed a place to go where I could get away from the rat-race on occasion. I've always had a green thumb, so why not Christmas trees? I bought a tree farm out in the boonies about ten years ago, and it's fun to come out here and watch the goyim go nuts for these things. ME: Did you know Alex built his house on an old Christmas tree farm? CB: Know it? I sold him the land! I heard he was looking for a place out in the country, so I sold him 8 1/2 acres of bottomland. It was a frost pocket, so the trees never grew very well there. ME: How do you feel about Donna Halper getting all the credit for discovering Rush? CB: Let's be honest; when she played Working Man, she was just looking for a long track to play so she could go take a shit. She had no idea it would take off. I'm the person who got them that record deal. If I hadn't been in the office that day back in June of '74, Neil might still be selling tractor parts for his old man. ME: I ran into Terry Brown the other day at a restaurant, any thoughts? CB: I suppose he bitched and moaned about Rush giving him the axe back in '83. His entire career is built around the fact that he produced Moving Pictures. He's such a bitter old man. I looked at my watch and realized that we had been talking more than an hour. I knew Tombstone and Lorraine would be waiting for me at the Huguenot, so I strapped a fine Norwegian Spruce to the roof of the car and took my seat next to Goober's stuffed llama, now my constant unobtrusive companion. I returned to find Lorraine in surprisingly good spirits. So much so, she was wearing her old 7COG dancer outfit and modeling it for Tombstone. Quite frankly, the sight of that thing makes my hair stand on end. All I can imagine is Norman prancing around his room in it. I left TM and Lorraine to decorate the tree while I went to the kitchenette to make some coffee. In order to keep in mind the reason for our trek to the Frozen North, I decided to play some Popol Vuh in Goober's honor. The first song had barely passed the one minute mark when I heard Lorraine shouting. "What the hell is that? I know Goober says he doesn't do drugs, but you'd have to be stoned to listen to that shit." It was probably best that we eat our dinner in silence. After dinner we sat around the fireplace and reminisced about our travails on the "Goober Trail". We'd all met some strange characters and had experiences that will forever be seared into our memories. It was some comfort that we had each other in which to confide, since outsiders would never be able to understand our tribulations. It gave me a warm, fuzzy feeling. . . but it only turned out to be heartburn. With the Inner-City Olympics and judgment day for Goober just around the corner, we all retired to bed early. Lorraine put the Vapor Trolls Pez dispenser under her pillow, I tucked in the stuffed llama, and Tombstone sent a selfie to some woman he'd met at the Soak and Poke.

  6. My 8yr old got a CHIMA Lego set. 412 pieces. Really worked hard for about three hours on it. He got burnt out. My older brother and my Dad finished it together. I just took pics of them thinking of the quality time found in this simple act. Great feeling!

  7. Billy, day 6 ;) I had a wonderful day. Lucy loved Santas stocking, she got a nice doll from a friend, and puzzles/Barbie/stuffed animals from my dad and stepmom! I didn't expect anything but they sent me awesome pajamas, a cute purse and my dad got me a jumbo squirting flower!!! Haha YES!!! Happy holidays, Rushians! Hope you all had a great day with family and friends. :)

  9. I love Rio - it's always been my favorite. But, after watching ESL again, I agree with you. ESL is phenomenal! Xanadu with Alex and Geddy playing the doublenecks is absolutely amazing! Neil's drumming is spectacular. One song after the other, it is a great performance.

  10. I'll vouch for tx, he's a good guy. He won't let you down...with the confidence pool he was just trying to give others a chance to win. Plus a couple of those weeks he was spending 167 hours a week trying to sign his family up for health insurance in the brave new world of health care. Sounds like my kind of man - devoted and responsible. I'm surprised it only took him 167 hours to sign his family up for health insurance. He must have an "in" or a secret touch. Or something. I never said it only took him one week... ;)

  11. I'd like to vote for Dio because he wasn't an asshole, and Heaven and Hell, and the Mob Rules are truly great, but the early work with Ozzy was SO great I couldn't do it in good conscience. Other than that, my comments echo those of PM, though he said it much better than I could.

  15. How did Ozzy sound when you saw them? He was spotty here in the U.S. But technical excellence has never been what draws people to Ozzy. He's like DLR in that regard. There's just something about his voice that's great. He was great on the Rio show. And did you hear how he pulled out a Brazilian flag at the show in Buenos Aires? It's as offensive as screaming "hello Boston" at a show in NY!

  17. Voted for Ozzy. I love the stuff they did with Dio though. Dio did give the band a better singer but there was just more material with Ozzy and their first six albums is one of the greatest runs ever in music. Ozzy's vocals fit Sabbath and their image much better than any of their other singers did. He had a haunting vocal style on those first few albums that nobody could touch and fit the songs perfectly. Musically, the band was just amazing and came up with so many original things, mainly the classic riffs that Iommi was able to turn out with great consistency. It's too bad the material they did with Dio had to be broken up into little stints together. If Heaven & Hell, Mob Rules, Dehumanizer and The Devil You Know had all come out one after the other that would've been another great album run for the band. Not as good as their first six but it wouldn't have been too far behind. Never much cared for the albums they did with Gillian and Hughes. Those albums just weren't Sabbath to me. Musically, Born Again was good but the lyrics were awful. With Born Again and Seventh Star Sabbath really lost their identity and it seems Iommi was struggling with what the band was supposed to be. That's why I liked the Tony Martin era a lot, Sabbath got back to being evil again. When Martin came in, the lyrics were dark again and Iommi was back to playing his sinister sounding riffs once more. In other words, Sabbath got back to being Sabbath with Tony Martin. Lots of good material there and one of the most underrated eras of any band ever. I like 13 a lot and if it's their last album, it's a fine addition to their discography and nice way to close out their career.

  21. Christmas was awesome. I have been saving up for a laptop since September with plans to get a new one tomorrow when they're on sale. My best friend is the only person that knew that I was going to get a new laptop. Today my parents surprised me with a new one because my mom used mine in November and realized how shitty it is. She is awesome. Even better than a new computer was being able to spend last night and all of today with different members of my family. I think I am finally at the stage where I enjoy being with family more than getting presents.

  24. It wouldn't be too unbelievable that such recordings were made available AFTER Rush disbands. So hopefully (and following my line of thinking), in a Catch 22 way, we won't get those lost recordings for quite a while

  28. I actually forgot exactly HOW I found this forum...but the reason i DID find it, was because I was a former member of the Geddylee.net forum, which closed down I would say shortly after the R30 tour. I do know alot of former members from there, are now HERE. I DO still miss Geddylee.net. Geddy himself actually replied to several board members' questions and comments, as well, which was awesome!

  30. Some things in this thread are inevitabilities. We can all flirt and play Days of Our TRF Lives all we want, but certain people are sure to end up together. Gangsterfurious may be winking at all the other girls and getting poor LABT's hopes up with Cub talk, but she'll be going to the dance with Sheldon. They're the typical "we bicker all the time but everyone knows we really like each other" couple.

  45. Then, I'm your man! I've got loads of money and I'm no good at math, so, do the math. You had me at, "loads of money." If only the "loads of money" part were true. Wait, are we actually supposed to be honest while going after these girls? This changes matters considerably. Tell me lies. Tell me sweet little lies. I'm totally gullible. Can't do it, Janie. I respect you and will always be honest with you. Same goes for the other ladies here on TRF. I guess we just have to lie about how much money we have... and then utilize our charm and experience to get away with it. If we had good looks, we wouldn't have to be concerned with any of this sh*t....... I'm sure that if you have enough money then looks just won't matter and Janie would gladly be in a relationship with you. She'd just cheat on you with the good looking guy. HEY! Hey! Whoa! Only if he's well-hung too. (Let it be known that I am a very good well-behaved girl.)

  46. Sarah Palin? At least she spewing harmless drivel that can be easily ignored. I have not heard her speak in months. Now our lying president is another story. Everything arrogant thing Obama says regarding his healthcare is a lie. Just admit its a joke? You all know its the truth right? and Dennis Rodman should be deported for being a traitor to his country. Period. You love heinous dictators and want to sleep with one? (we all know they are having sex together) then marry him and help him rule and kill people.
