Presto - First Reaction

From another thread:

I remember buying it the day it came out. Ran to my dorm room. Put it in the cd and rocked out approvingly to Show Don’t Tell...and then sat there speechless as the crap started to ooze out of the CD player. Mostly awful songs. Awful production. Awful album. It still stings a little how much this album disappoints me.

Haven't you come to appreciate any of it after all this time?

No. Indeed time has only increased my conviction that Presto is an uninspired milksop of an album to which I give no quarter.

You laugh at my trauma?!?!?!?????? Heaven forfend!!!!

No. I laughed at the string of words used to describe it.

One of my top 5 favorite albums. I love almost every song on it. A very solid record. Show Don't Tell, Presto, Chain Lightning, Red Tide and Available Light were all on heavy repeat

It's uplifting to see 3 Canadian socialists deeply inspire a man who quotes Adolf Hitler.

If they are socialists, why aren't they giving 90% of their millions to us lesser folk?

For Alex and Geddy, I believe they do their charitable work based what their heart tells them.

For Peart, his motives are a little more ulterior, in my opinion...

Around my home in Westside Los Angeles panhandlers often stood at the long red lights leading onto the Pacific Coast Highway. I always liked to help them out—never understanding how colder hearts could fail to see it was mental illness that put them there, not laziness. When I call over the unfortunate one and hand over the bill, if they give me the “God bless you” line, I shake my head while saying, “This has nothing to do with God—it’s between you and me.”

Pretty much my experience. I remember digging the start of the second track up until "sun dogs fire on the horizon" . . . what a huge letdown.

Does anyone here remember their first reaction to the album when it came out?

Not really. I just remember really dig it. GUP was jarring to me, nothing I expected after PeW, MP, and Signals. Power Windows smoothed things out, I dug the sound. Then the HYF follow up. So Presto is just what I wanted, I had matured becoming a man. No longer living off the meat of Heavy Metal.

Are you serious or are you pulling my leg? It's hard to tell with you.

Totes literally serious.

Fam, your reaction is well lit! Proper good vibes son! Chill to the soul, peace to the max!

Presto is a great album. Flawed but its best songs make up most of my top ten lmao

edit: socialists to liberals

Can we not bring politics into this. If you must, rant your panties off in SOCN, not in Lorraine's thread.

Hold Your Fire and Roll The Bones are better.

My favourite songs are:

Show Don't Tell

Chain Lightning

Presto

The Pass

Superconductor

Available Light

Red Tide is great as well. The rest is a bit meh.

Production is weak but I always enjoy coming back to this one.

But funnily enough Roll The Bones, an album I used to hate, I now find overall a lot better. But Presto is a top ten Rush album for me still.

I really miss Rush. I need to get back to these guys!

Weird, your reply was somehow more immature than mine.

I had just moved to San Diego literally 2 weeks before it came out so it always reminds me of that time in life which was good. As for the album itself, good not great. Edited by driventotheedge

I loved it. A return of the guitar as the central instrument, great drumming and vocals. The production sound was of its time, I think. Very INXS.

Still a favorite.

You'll be surprised how good they sound when you haven't listened to them for awhile. Makes you realize all the more why you loved them to begin with.
