Bands You're Obsessing Over Right Now

I’m kinda glad that didn’t suck me in at the time actually. I prefer to engage with artists on my own terms rather than just through hype, and I still remember listening to folklore around when it came out and just feeling uninterested by it. I’m sure that will be different when I give it a shot next, but at the time I did not need to follow the bandwagon.

I actually prefer Evermore haha

But both are immaculate. Try the Hunger Games song Safe And Sound. That's kinda what us Swift fans were asking for more of. I have up hope, then Folklore dropped and I was like WOW she still has it

Oh I forgot to tell you I did listen to that song, and the other one you sent me last week. I really liked both.

The Lakes is a song I never paid attention to til one day it impacted me. Love the wordplay in it.

Folklore and Evermore mean a lot to me because I was sort of floundering with her, as I misunderstood Lover and thought she had totally lost her way to pop charts.

Folklore, Evermore and Midmights blew me away. Its just SONGWRITING and without bounds.

I now love Lover.

I’ll relisten, but it was effective when I played it last week for sure.

Yeah, that’s the great strength I’m realizing with her. I had actually been listening to a songwriting podcast at work the other week for an hour or two when I thought to myself, “you know, maybe it’s time for me to try Taylor Swift again, for real.” Somewhere deep down I knew she was a great songwriter and I just wasn’t seeing it.

She releases singles that pull in the masses, and honestly? They are still full of her character.

The middle schooler in me wouldn’t look past the commercialism of those singles.

Funnily enough, I got into Swift in 2008, the year I finally tried to give the charts a chance.

Erm...she was the only thing I ended up a huge fan of

Don’t blame you for that, lol. The charts in 2008… not the best, lol.

Jeff Buckley

Not even listening to the music directly, just listening to podcasts and documentaries about him.

I have moments of absolute obsession with his music and his iconic allure.

Paradise Lost

My one time favourite metal band of all time for a good decade is having a resurgence.

This will sound crazy, but they affect my emotions similarly to Taylor Swift. DON'T ASK ME FOR THE SCIENCE.

Phyllis Hyman.

Tragically underrated r nb singer and IMO one of the all timers.

Mick

She is beloved by those in the know. I'm shocked she's not celebrated more loudly by those inspired by her. I don't believe, for example, that Diane Warren wrote all those huge ballads in the nineties without one listen to Hyman.

Wet Leg - Indie rock female guitar playing duo from Isle of Wight with male backing band. Initially heard them on a magazine end-of-year best of CD amongst other artists. Didn't think much beyond the song was good but nothing more.

Since heard one or 2 more and they have a quirky humour to their songs and performance which is refreshing.

In one of their u toob concert vids I thought their stage banter was novel in that they introduced the band by asking each member 'Hey, Josh, how are you doing?' and each member replied. Seemed like they had a good vibe going.

Plus their lyrics are a bit funny and quirky and one of the duo that does less singing and more lead-playing always seems to be on the verge of laughing or at least smirking at the words.

A band called Dry Cleaning are also worth checking out too although they're not as appealing to me as Wet Leg. A male band with female lead who pretty much just speaks her words in a Mark E Smith or street poetry kind-of-way. The lyrics are usually notes and observations she's made from conversations and are usually quite humorous in a deadpan way.

The band are ok but listening to them live online is a bit frustrating because her voice gets lost in the mix sometimes and she needs to be heard clearly to get the right effect. Interesting overall though.

Other than that, revisiting thrash metal in the form of Sacred Reich. Can't stop listening to Surf Nicaragua. Love it!

Jon Batiste- World Music Radio

One of this years AOTY Grammy nominees, I really enjoyed this album. He's won before, this could win him the category again.

i am also shocked that no 90's era female artist gave her any shout out ever.  as i said Phyllis could have been easily part of that grouping had her health not declined.  like she reminds me of Toni Braxton for example.

I don't know how much Toni listened to deep cuts. After all, her biggest hit was written by Diane Warren. I swear, listen to all Warren's hits for other artists, you'll notice a PH vibe. Once someone pointed that out to me online on a PH chat I was like...oh

Diane Warren co-wrote Bed Of Nails with Alice Cooper and Desmond Child. I'm pretty sure Alice wrote the lyrics because those are not Diana Warren lyrics at all. Makes me wonder what she contributed to the song since it's a upbeat rock tune.

Meat Loaf recorded some songs written by her on Welcome To The Neighborhood. Those songs are definitely Diane Warren.

Diane Warren must have the easiest life. She just makes huge hits and sits back and relaxes.

My initial Taylor craze cooled off a bit. Not super like me to go listen to everything in quick succession and I think I realized that, so I’m still just on Red and Speak Now… but wow those two records are gonna stay with me my whole life.

I just hope you don't hit an album, find you dislike it, and write her off. 1989 and Reputation are super slick, but I still feel a little time spent with Folklore onwards could prove special.

I recommend you read the lyrics with the songs. I didn't truly appreciate many songs til I properly heard the lyrics.

Two I recommend, that helped me through a suicidal patch last year, are Happiness and This Is Me Trying.
