Headphones

Wasn't sure where to put this so yeah

My current headphones are starting to go. Fading in right ear, and sometimes not coming through at all because of a flimsy volume control switch in the middle of the cord. I'm using the Steelseries 9H. It's actually a gaming headset, so it probably doesn't have the best price-to-quality ratio for the headphones anyway.

I made this thread so I could ask TRF what they use for headphones, and if they'd repurchase. I predict I'll be needing new ones soon. Budget is 50$ to 80$.

I've been using sony stereo headphones mdr-zx100 for a while now. This is the second pair of them i've owned. I think they're only like $25-$30 and the sound is good, at least to my ears since i'm not an audio snob.

Edit: I tried to post a pic but it went all wonky on me. I guess you'll have to look them up

I have a pair of them, they're probably my longest lasting headphones

What sort of sound do you prefer? Bass heavy? Flat?

I wouldn't say I'm particularly an audiophile. I want a balanced sound. The sort that sounds like it's supposed to. I remember really enjoying my Steelseries Siberia before I broke it, which (to my ears) is more bass-heavy than other headphones, but not overwhelmingly.

Most of the headphones I've tried are gaming headsets, fault of me being a young aspiring gamer since I could buy my own stuff. I don't know if it's helpful to state that I don't like pretty much any of the Logitech or Razer headsets. They sound off to me. I don't know what that corresponds to in the world of real headphones.

I've owned these before! Nice and portable but a little uncomfortable for me.

Depends on your source. Hi-fi audio or phone? Both?

Here is a great resource:

www.headfi.org

I have a few pair I use, depending on source. My best are Goldring DR 150's. But for travel / phone (compressed music), I highly recommend Koss KSC75's - If you don't mind the clip on style. Don't be scared by the low price - (around $15). They have great range, including Bass response, have a volume control, and lifetime warranty. Have had mine for many years. For on ear portables, the Sennheiser px100 series get great reviews. I tried them once and honestly say the KSC-75's were as good or better - but if you don't like clip on style:

http://www.amazon.co...ords=koss ksc75

http://www.amazon.co...eiser px 100-ii

The Koss porta-pro's are the all time highly regarded competitor to the px 100's - at christmas I bought a pair with mic/control, but found that the control does not work with my android phone, so I will be selling them.

http://www.amazon.co...ss portapro ktc

Then there are earbuds / in-ear style. Quite variable in sound quality IMO, but if you find a good pair they are great for sound isolation.

The headphones I'd be purchasing would be for home, as I have earbuds I'm quite happy with. Thanks for the recommendation, and also thank you for rating the Sennheisers: good to know I wouldn't be missing out on much if I skipped them.

I'll check out that website as well!

I've been using the Audio-Technica M50s (the older ones without the detachable cord) for awhile now and they're my favorite headphones I've ever had. They were around $130 when I got them, but there's also the M40s which are around $90. I've never tried those personally, but I can't imagine they'd suck.

I'd add that the koss porta-pros are kind of flimsy and the design has more going on than the Senn's or any other traditional headphone. Part of that is because they have a "slider" to adjust tension on your ear. So it's a pro/con thing.

Since these are for home use, realize that any portable sub- $100 phone is going to pale with a high end over-ear Can. If you have a quality source, that is.

It's been a long time since I shopped for good phones, but If your goal is beyond just replacing broken ones and you have a good sound source -- seriously consider spending $100 for some Grados - or at least considering them for comparison:

I second the AT-M50x headphones. By far, the best sounding headphones I have ever owned. I have seen the M50x model for around $100.00 a few times in the past couple of weeks. I combined mine with a Fiio E11K headphone amp. My iPhone has never sounded better.

You can't go wrong with the M50x. They will spoil you for anything else.

I can find them in a physical store, too, so that's pretty sweet! I'll check them out.

Sennheisers are very good but tend to be over-priced.

You get a lot of bang for your buck with AKG, Grado and Audio-Techics shop around and consider refurbished (returned stock) to get a healthy discount on premium headphones. Philips Fidelio are sweet and you could probably pick them up for around $100 if you look hard enough.

I almost prefer them without in-line anyway. It seems like a weak point for headphones, especially if they get knocked around a lot. My current pair is failing because of it.

Yeah, i think it's a good idea but if you don't buy a decent set it'll break really easily.

Yeah, the BEST pair of headphones I've ever owned. They were my last 'audiophile' purchase. My cat Sophie chewed through the cord, but my electrician backround made that no problem. They are fixed and work like a charm! My BFF Dave told me they're 'Flat' engineered, but all I know is they sound EXCELLENT! http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j223/OldRUSHfan/Music%20Smilies/Headphonesnotes2.gif

What headphones would you recommend for us home-recording folk? Let's assume money is an issue. :)

If you were asking me, I'd go with what made ME happy, but could also afford. At the time I bought the AKG's I could afford them, and got 'em! I couldn't now, but I'm glad I could then! LOL

Ok. the Headphones on the same level as mine are now called the K240 Mk II, and they cost $149. Still $40 cheaper than mine did....http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j223/OldRUSHfan/Music%20Smilies/music-ENJOY.gif
