Cool starman - wood?

This one's pretty embarrassing - I thought I'd try my hand at acrylics. A painter I am not. I vaguely remember an art teacher saying something to me like, "son, some folks have the talent, and some folks don't . . . "

Are you kidding? This is fracking awesome. Nice work, man!!!!

Edit: Your art teacher is an ass - tell him I said so. A teacher should never be discouraging.

I can't see them now, either. Not sure what happened there. I'll see about reposting the photos.

Just reposting these since they disappeared from my original post. The blurry image at the bottom I think I did in high school - some clippings from magazines surrounding a weird drawing of the starman. My eye for the human body's proportions was (and still is) pretty screwy.

Thanks - I remember finishing the box part and then realizing the friggin' lid was going to cover the tops of the R and h! Fairly easy fix, though.

What Toymaker isn't telling us is that the box is really a singularity.... a black hole. Open the lid and you get sucked into Dionysus land.

Hey! thats a cool painting of Jimmy Page ! J/K I think its great . Your story reminds me of the time I took a classical guitar lesson . I forget what I played for him . Maybe it was the trees into and he sat stone faces and said " You said you knew how to play the guitar " I ended the lesson and never went back.

Hmmm . . . I can tell you how I think I did it, because it was a while back. The box is I think just a little 5" gift box that you can pick up at a lot of dollar stores. I painted the whole thing blue first (I think I must have decided not to use the lighter blue for the whole box because it was too much?). I'm pretty sure I penciled in the outlines of the letters, then brushed on the red, and finally used a black sharpie or something to outline the letters. The paints are just cheapo bottles of craft paint that you can usually also find at dollar stores.

It could be Page! One thing that bugs me about the painting is Geddy's nose, which is too upturned and perky. One of these days I might try to give it more of a hook-nose treatment - the Geddy nose we all know and love. I'd also like to make it look like he's not playing with oven gloves. Probably, though, I'll just leave it be, because if I start dicking with it I'll make it worse.

Your story about the classical guitar instructor makes me wonder how guys like that make a living. There's just no call for it. You've gone to the guy to learn something, and the first thing he does is say something cruel?

What's wrong with this painting? There' a bit of abstraction there, but that doesn't make it bad. Phooey on your art teacher--keep painting!

Oh, please. That looks better than stuff I've seen on the walls at the Art Institute of Chicago.

I reallllyyyy like this!
