I'm just gonna say, Clockwork Angels (the song)

There are many others but I know that nobody else will have chosen this. I honestly think it's PERFECT

That's the one I'd pick from CA.

Not sure how I missed this thread completely. I must have been on vacation or something. The masterpieces are or should be pretty obvious and the majority of them if not all were recorded before 1985 and there are to many to list... :codger:

Rush have four albums to my ears that are from start to finish made up of 10/10's: AFTK, MP, HYF, VT.

So to me, nothing can be improved on any of them.

I guess to simplify.... 2112-Grace Under Pressure is close enough. There are probably a few tunes in there somewhere that wouldn't be considered of masterpiece quality but to few to mention... :)

I don't know how I've missed this thread until now, either!

I'll say this- I use the term 'masterpiece' quite sparingly. I have to check myself two or three different times to be sure that what I'm calling a masterpiece is not simply just a great song. There is a significant difference.

Just as Segue said, there are four albums that I feel are in the 'masterpiece' category, but my choices are a little bit different. In chronological order, they are Hemispheres, Moving Pictures, Hold Your Fire, and Clockwork Angels.

And as for individual songs (or suites):

2112

A Farewell to Kings

Xanadu

Cygnus X-1, Book I

Spirit of Radio

Freewill

Jacob's Ladder

Natural Science

Between the Wheels

Marathon

Available Light

There are some others, but I don't want to cite songs as sheer masterpieces if I don't really think they are. From the 1990s forward, there have certainly been fewer of them (and I hate, hate, hate to say that. But I do feel that way).

I'll revisit this after I've made up my bloody mind.

I find it interesting at least that none of your "masterpiece" songs are from HYF or CA. Like I said interesting and I wouldn't argue with you with a couple exceptions. I would consider at least Mission and The Garden masterpiece quality anyway even though I like Second Nature more as far as HYF goes... :codger:

I didn't leave them off- look at my original post, at what's in bold now.

There are three more that are really close:

- The All The World's A Stage version of In The End .. it is so classic and resonates so much with me - but "classic" is a little different than masterpiece, and a masterful performance of a great great song I think is more fitting ..

- Red Barchetta .. no explanation necessary as to the greatness of this one .. and while it is unfair to compare songs, I just don't feel it is in the same league as Natural Science, Cygnus, The Necromancer, etc

- Tears .. this one captures something that I have a hard time putting my finger on - more than most songs, this one projects me back to a time and nails the vibe perfectly ... I wish they would have put more time into making it longer and stretching it out
