Where do I start with Bruce Springsteen?

Recommended Posts

Springsteen is no more interesting than John Mellencamp.

they're both

Not familiar with Mellencamp...

What?? you have never heard John Cougar Mellencamp

I prefer him to the boss by a long shot.

Will check him out!

Try "Scarecrow", it is one of his better works. I think you would enjoy it!

I must say....i'm enjoying him more then i have in the past. I love the 1st 4. the River's growing on me. I don't like his recent stuff. mostly cause the production is awful. I also really don't like when he tries to be deep and acoustic like on Nabraska, Tom Joad and Devils and Dust. it just falls flat every time for me.

I like him.......not love him......but he's all right.

HA! I love his deeper cuts on The River, Nebraska and The Ghost Of Tom Joad!

Joad is woefully underrated, in my opinion.

I will say, though, that I rarely pick out an acoustic Springsteen album. So, I get your point!

I also really love Lucky Town. Deceptively simple pop rockers, but truly beautiful and touching lyrics!

Not familiar with Mellencamp...

have bruce move to indiana...then you have mellencamp.

From the UK, it isn't very obvious to me what a difference moving to Indiana could be haha...

it's a states thing...people in the US could relate.

Indiana is known for being very white bread and a bit rural (lots of farming).

That's not really true for the state as a whole but does describe the part that Mellencamp is from (Seymour). If you've ever seen the movie Hoosiers, it's fairly descriptive of that area, even today.

Born To Run gets a perfect score from me, but it doesn't satisfy me the way some of his other albums do!

Greetings is really high for me as well.

Oh ya know.......the rising is good too. if a bit bloated but some good tunes in there. i had it on the other night.

Mick

Occasionally, if I am in a mega hurry, i skip a few of the middle songs. But i truly love that whole album. One of the best ever released by anybody.

I hate to admit this, but I nearly always agree with Rolling Stone when it comes to the Boss (until it comes to the last three albums...bleh)

I would do a one-two punch of "Darkness on the Edge of Town" & "Born to Run"

In all honesty, there is no better way to do it than this way!

Really? I would say that a large part of Indiana, outside of the northern area, is comprised of large farm fields.

I just don't get how he can be so hated...I really don't!

Because he sings like he's taking a dump. At least on the old stuff.

I enjoy he's "later" stuff, though. The non-blue-collar epics...

"Born to Run" mentions suicide twice in the opening stanza. That's just dumb.

In the day we sweat it out on the streets of a runaway American dream

At night we ride through the mansions of glory in suicide machines

Sprung from cages out on highway nine,

Chrome wheeled, fuel injected, and steppin' out over the line

H-Oh, Baby this town rips the bones from your back

It's a death trap, it's a suicide rap

We gotta get out while we're young

`Cause tramps like us, baby we were born to run

No it isn't.

If you look at the context, it is obvious he is making reference to the predictable future (the one awaiting the characters on Darkness?), so life is to be lived now, while still young (even if the pleasures are a little on the dangerous side!).
