The Mick and Segue Music Commentary Thread

Yeah...they are a band with so much to dig into I still find them a challenge.

I'm not into them right now...but that's because Sonata Arctica happened haha and I really love them deeply.

But DT are going to be a mainstay. I do sometimes have torn feelings about them but when the mood strikes me...I find them enthralling! I felt like this for nearly a decade with Nightwish. I enjoy this. I got into Rush mega fast and my interest peaked I think very quickly.

Nightwish, Sonata Arctica and Springsteen are three bands that have taken ages to get under my skin and take over my life. DT are pretty much in that same category.

I've especially loved discovering songs like These Walls, Take Away My Pain and Build Me Up...I never expected to be so moved by these. Odd but the lyrics to each I connect with somehow.

Also worth remembering that I have discovered SA and DT around the same time and have been trying to get into both since about 2006/07.

Odd how this past year it clicked!

Want to know what I think did it? King's X and Kansas. Somehow I found aspects of these bands in either one or both bands and those little familiar elements were my gateway!

I've even found some reviews online where SA fans link the sound of Kansas to them...I am certain this is why. And I hear a lot of KX influence in early DT like Images or FII.

Next album is Days Of Grays. My favourite.

The first three albums took me a while to warm too. I love them so much...I think it's interesting how your initial response matches mine ten years ago.

Welcome back Mick.

Plenty about Unia to love, and it never gets old either, really.

Thanks Not!!!!

Yea i remember thinking the tones in the keyboards were very Rudess like.

great melodies too.

Mick

Yeah, and on the latest album they've introduced even more new keyboard sounds. Tony & Henkka work together to bring the keyboards into Sonata Arctica, but Henkka is the one who writes all the solos and of course plays all the keyboard parts live.

I think it's great when musicians utilize the keyboard correctly - exploring all sorts of sounds with it.

How are you now with the latest album? I think it's the least of all their releases with still so much to enjoy!

I think Kings X and Sonata Arctic's are my two favourite bands I've started listening to on as a result of this forum (I remember trying SA again fter I saw someone post Reckoning Night...I thought "oh I remember that band"). Third would be Kansas.

Love this place because of these gems.

Still listening to my "EP" edit, and my favorite songs remain the two singles.

My favourite song is Life. I've had a mixed bag year with new releases. I'm not sure this would have stood out last year, a year I really loved.

But I am enjoying it!

The second verse of that song is my favorite part of the entire album, it's beautiful. On the whole though, Closer To An Animal is still my favorite song from it.

See anything exceptional? I took a 2 week break from TRF around the same time you took your 3 week. During it I stil listened to plenty of albums and tunes, but I found myself watching more movies with the extra free time.

It looks like Mick's been active lately, but not posting

Here, I'll try phoning him in: :blah:

After discovering Jari's remastering for The Ninth Hour project a couple weeks ago, I've been playing around with Radiohead's Kid A in audacity. It started with just How To Disappear Completely - I wanted the track to have a fuller more ambient sound and have it simulate the feeling of being cuddled by a huge blanket... But last week I decided I'd start remixing the entire album. It's a lot of fun, and I'm learning a lot along the way.

i'm coming around to Coheed. I played the first 2 albums again yesterday. i know there's a long ass story that spans many albums but i really don't care about it, lol

Anyway. i'm connected more with their rich melodic Sense more then anything.

Claudio is slowly working his way into my Affections too.

out of the albums i've heard which is the 1st 4 plus the new one. i like In keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3 the best.
