I will say tjhis.......live in poland by Toto......is a way way better live album then what Rush is putting out these days live.

Mick

That's because Toto are currently the superior band.

Thinking......if we're talking current output.

1000 times yes.

Falling in Between Slaps CA around so damn much, lol

Mick

Live In Poland sits on CA live and suffocates it to death. Which it deserves.

Don't ya love that Joe doesn't yodel, lol

Mick

Joseph Williams is amazing. Why he never made it as big as a load of crud singers i will never know. I adore his voice!

Can i just say i squealed for joy when i heard he was back.

Kimball was good on record.

Servicable

But horrible live.

Just is better in EVERY environment

The live DVD's with him, arg whenever he comes on I want to stop it.

And on record he has his moments, but I sure am glaad he was never the one and only vocalist!

Presto is indeed a very good album. Definitely better than Hold Your Fire, Roll the Bones, Counterparts, Test for Echo, Snakes & Arrows and Clockwork Angels.

I still don't love its production, but it's still better than any later production except Counterparts.

I love the musical diversity and often funky playing. They manage to be catchy and hooky, but still not too poppy or simple.

Just Superconductor kinda sucks (too repetitive) and Hand Over Fist is also rather boring.

Chain Lightning, Anagram, Hand Over Fist, The Pass...

Difficult to pick a favorite from this album.

Somebody else who loves Anagram.

It's so lonely over here, lol

Mick

I love it all, i love all of Superconductor as well, aside from the backing vocals.

Brilliant! Pure genius!

I love every second of this album. It has jazz, pop, funk and even metal.

It might not have any Rush's top-5 songs ever, but every single song is very good.

When I listen to Presto, I listen to it like Tommy or The Wall. It's an "entity".

Some people complain about "thin production" but even THAT works. It's so... PRESTO!

.

Great post!!!

The above post basically says it all for me. No great songs, but every song is very good (with the possible exception of Superconductor which is ok),

Sort of an odd album in way, but it fits together well and has some very good lyrics. Not as good as HYF, PoW, 2112, MP, AFTK & FBN but as good, or better, than anything which came after and as good, or better, than some of the albums which came before it.

A darn good album.

I have to admit that next to The Pass, I think Red Tide is one of the best songs on the album.

I think Geddy's voice is at its best on this album.

The vocals and lyrics are outstanding throughout the album.

The echoing "superconductor" vocal is the only blemish on a great track. It's got a killer guitar hook with a heavier sound that had been missing from RUSH, a nice Signals-style key section for a bridge, and lyrics that reflect the rye RUSH sense of humor that I love. Plus, as a live track it gets people on their feet and dancing. :7up:

They should play it next tour.

Anagram is a fun little track. The lyrics are cleverly done by Neil... "End the need for Eden...chase the dreams of merchandise"

Never trust anyone that ranks Vapor Trails way above Hemispheres.

What's that supposed to mean?!

It means cleanse your ears with the mighty Hemispheres, young man!

The ecstatic journey that is Hemispheres beats Vapor Trails' clunky two-chord bombast any day of the year.

Just my opinion, of course.

Oh, and sorry- in the spirit of the thread's intent...Presto is a wonderful pop-rock album, and is still quintessential Rush music.

To those who've classified it as prog- I actually hear more prog in Hold Your Fire (which is an absolutely flawless record).

Hems is the better album.

I will still choose to play Presto and Vapor Trails over it most days!

A Rush album is a Rush album. Doesn't matter which I prefer I am still a massive fan!

A brilliant drumming album. Lots of subtle intricacies everywhere; creative, thoughtful drumming marred only be an anemic snare production.

Other highlights:

  • The Taurus pedals in "Hand Over Fist"
  • The instrumental section in "Show Don't Tell" - including the brilliant manner in which they return to the theme at the end
  • The brilliant polyrhythm of "Scars"
  • The grandiose pleasantry of the outro of "Presto"
  • Neil's continued development of reflective nostalgia in "Available Light"
  • The textured acoustic guitar layers in both "Hand over Fist" and "Scars"
  • The atmospheric guitar in "Chain Lightning" - and how poignant that song is considering its subject has been dead now for almost 20 years
  • "The Pass"'s ambiguous "Christ, what have you done?" lyric
  • The modulation and intentional over-the-top nature of "Superconductor"

Best drums: Red Tide.

That's a great, "jazzy" metal song. I love it.

"Metal"? Closer to pop if you ask me... the guitar tone is harder than on most of Presto but much of the song is dominated by piano or synth and even the harder guitar work is more "background-y" than anything else...
