I like to think of lyricists the may have influenced Neil...

Jon Anderson of YES.

Jon is the exuberant frontman, the prescient lyricist, and the musical steward of Yes. On many of their classic albums - Fragile, Close to the Edge, The Yes Album among them - he developed themes and tied together the startling musicianship of guitarist Steve Howe, bassist Chris Squire, keyboard player Rick Wakeman, and drummer Bill Bruford.

Yes songs are works of inspiration. Jon draws on the divine for his words, and says that lyrics often reveal their meanings to him long after they have been recorded. His passion for these songs comes through not just when he performs them, but also as he tells their stories: the guardian angel that looks over "Starship Trooper," the higher self in "Close to the Edge," the collective beauty of "And You and I."

It was 1969 when Yes released their first (self-titled) album. On the set was a song called "Survival," which deals with the power of nature and our relationship with the Earth. In 2011, survival, healing and humanity were some of subjects Jon explored on his acclaimed solo album Survival & Other Stories. The project began with an ad on Jon's website reading "Musicians Wanted." He received hundreds of MP3s, leading to collaborations with musicians around the world. Later that year, Jon released Open, a 21 minute piece in four movements based on the classical music that framed the early Yes material.

Don't get me wrong, I think Neil has written some mighty fine stuff in his time, but I don't subscribe to the opinion that some seem to have that he is the best of all time, and I can think of quite a few who I consider better eg:

Justin Sullivan (New Model Army)

Bob Dylan (obviously)

Bruce Springsteen

and quite a few more...interested in peeps opinions on this.

I'm sure his is mentioned! My favorite!!! FISH!

I always felt Ian Anderson of jethro Tull is one of the best Lyricists. The wit and satire he writes is like poetry.

Roger Waters as well. He just has an elgant way of having direct lyrics, no fluff just stuff.

Thos 2 are the only 2 I think are better lyricsts the Neil

Joey Ramone

Bon Scott

Taylor Swift

My 10-yr old

If you've put a pen to paper, add yourself here.

Neil is a horrid lyricist. Rush is absolutely the only band in the world that would ever accept

"Atmospheric changes make them sensitive again"

"In a dog's........."

"I'd rather be a tortoise from Galapagos"

"It was long after midnight when we got to unconditional love "

"We carry a sensitive cargo below the waterline"

Notice I'm not including the early stuff. I gave him a few years to grow into it and it got worse, not better.

"Four Seasons In One Day"

Four seasons in one day

Lying in the depths of your imagination

Worlds above and worlds below

Sun shines on the black clouds hanging over the domain

Even when you're feeling warm

The temperature could drop away

Like four seasons in one day

Smiling as the shit comes down

You can tell a man from what he has to say

Everything gets turned around

And I will risk my neck again, again

You can take me where you will

Up the creek and through the mill

Like all the things you can't explain

Four seasons in one day

Blood dries up

Like rain, like rain

Fills my cup

Like four seasons in one day

Doesn't pay to make predictions

Sleeping on an unmade bed

Finding out wherever there is comfort there is pain

Only one step away

Like four seasons in one day

Blood dries up

Like rain, like rain

Fills my cup

Like four seasons in one day
