Which songs in the Rush discography (excluding live recordings) do you think are the most powerful and atmospheric? Or rather, which ones make you feel most like you're there, experiencing what's being described thanks to lyrics, instrumentation, and/or production?

MY LIST:

Red Sector A

Marathon

Jacob's Ladder

Red Barchetta

Cygnus X-1 & 2

Witch Hunt

Subdivisions

Cygnus and Hemispheres are both very "story-booky" to me—very easy to get the mental movie theatre going. Headphones enhances the experience (the 5.1 Cygnus is kind of cool, too). I like the vocal panning left and right in Hemispheres on the line "their spirits were divided into blinded Hemispheres."

The Discovery bit in 2112 is cool, too. Maybe it's the sound effects that get me. There's something that 70s sound, too. I'm always really moved by things like The Prophet's Song by Queen and Fool's Overture by Supertramp, with the distant noises and recorded voices (as in Witch Hunt and Camera Eye). A lot of Rush tunes "send me" in that way. It's not just about chops and message.

Good question.

There are many for sure...it's one thing they do very well in their songs.

The Fountain of Lamneth

2112

Xanadu

La Villa Strangiato

Red Barchetta

YYZ

The Analog Kid

Losing It

Afterimage

Red Sector A

Marathon (specifically the bridge/solo section)

Mystic Rhythms

Animate (specifically the bridge "my counterpart...")

Armor & Sword

The Wreckers (specifically the cinematic bridge section "the breakers roar...")

The Garden

There are definitely many more...but these were the ones that came to me now.

FoL - easily #1 for me.

You can feel the confusion when he's lost at sea in "No one at the Bridge" with the rise and fall of the music like waves. You can feel the heartache as he leaves his love to continue on his journey in "Panacea". etc....

The intro to The Camera Eye is probably the most atmospheric thing they've ever done.

I was going to say Cygnus X1, but I guess that's out in space, so . . . no atmosphere.

Hammer, if you can, see if you can find The Camera Eye they did in concert on 12/09/82. The bootleg is called Music In The Abstract. It is quite good. Especially how they end the song.
