Rush is not a Fly By Night band. So if you enjoy the Caress of Steel, pick up a copy of 2112. If you live in the northern Hemispheres, pick up a copy of A Farewell to Kings. Otherwise, go buy Permanent Waves. If you like Moving Pictures and have Grace Under Pressure, the Signals indicate you will like Power Windows. And Presto, you're a fan. By then you may be brave enough to Roll The Bones on Test for Echo. Some people give negative Feedback about Vapor Trails, so be sure to pick up the remix. Assuming you have avoided all of the Snakes & Arrows slung on this board like Clockwork, Angels will send you the R40 Blue Ray box set of live shows.

EDIT: Hold Your Fire people. I forgot one.

Not to worry. As long as you didn't leave Signals out. :)

No Counterparts either.

One album was left for my Counterparts to discover on their own.

Some things are better off undiscovered.

F*ck. No it's all worthwhile. Even Speed of Love is worthwhile since it gives people something to make fun of.

anyway, figure out which songs you liked best from the time machine dvd and find the albums they're on.

if geddy at his worst can turn you on to the band, you'll probably really f***ing love this band

If he listens to ATWAS he may have to check his headphones and also double check to make sure that he is listening to the same band.... :haz:

"this has to be budgie or something..."

Rush - The Brief History of.

Rush started out as a three piece band out of Toronto. But no

t the three guys you know and love from the Live In Cleveland concert. The Drummer is John Rutsey. He was with the band for the first album "Rush" in 1974. Rush had trouble getting a record label so they created their own company Moon Records and produced their first album themselves. Donnah Halper a DJ for a Cleveland radio station heard a copy of "Rush" and got hooked by the Song "Working Man". She started playing it on air and got tonnes of requests for it. It was the big break they were waiting for.

Then they were getting requests to do shows in Cleveland and other places away from Toronto. Due to health issues and an unwillingness to travel John Rutsey left the band and they replaced him with a new guy Neil Peart. They then released Fly By Night June 25th 1975. Fly By Night included Rush's first epic "By-Tor And The Snow Dog".

Following the success of the first two albums they released Caress Of Steel September 24th 1975. This album included their second forray into longer epic tracks, "The Necromancer" and "The Fountain Of Lamneth". This album was tore to pieces by critics, both for Geddy's high pitched wail, and the odd time signatures and lack of rhythm. They went on a tour, but were stuck playing in small venues with very low attendance. This tour was later dubbed the Down The Tubes Tour.

Their record company tried to get them to revert back to their earlier, commercially friendly style of music. They didn't listen to the critics and instead wrote 2112, a twenty minute song and released the album 2112 April 1st '76. Despite the length of the opening track, this song was a hit with the fans, yet music critics continued to hate the band. September 29th they released their first live album "All The World's A Stage".

January 1st 1980 was the release of their next album Permanent Waves and with the new decade came a new sound from the band. They started to go back to writing hits and eased off on the epics. This album started out with the hits "The Spirit Of Radio" and "Freewill" before ending with "Natural Science"

In October Rush released their second live album Exit Stage Left which many fans consider to be the holy grail of live albums. This album is available on both CD and DVD. If you are interested in getting the DVD I'd recommend buying the Replay X3 box set, because it includes Exit Stage Left, as well as Grace Under Pressure and A Show of Hands DVD's as well as the Grace Under Pressure CD which is only available in this set.

1982 the band took a 180° spin sound wise and Geddy introduce a synthesizer to the band for the Signals album. He played both Bass, and Synth along with singing. It starts out with Subdivisions which helped hook teenagers onto this band because it represented their life so well. The album then pounds out The Analog Kid, Chemistry, Digital Man, The Weapon, New World Man, Losing It, and ends with Countdown (which they dedicate to the space shuttle Columbia)

Grace Under Pressure was released next on April 12th 1984 and pushed the band further into the synth era and away from the hard rock. It kicks off with the hits Distant Early Warning, Red Sector A and carries on with The Enemy Within, Body Electric, Red Lenses and Between The Wheels. This album led to the Grace Under Pressure Tour which is available on DVD or in the Replay X3 box set which also includes the CD.

Power Windows came next on October 29th, 1985 and was all about the keyboard. Alex didn't care for it, but Geddy loved it. It featured The Big Money, Grand Designs, Manhattan Project, Marathon, Territories, Middletown Dreams, Emotion Detector and Mystic Rhythms. This is my favourite album of theirs.

In August of 1997 Rush experienced a horrible tragedy. Neil Pearts daughter got in a horrible car accident and passed away. He took a break from the band to be with his wife and family . Within months his wife got diagnosed with Cancer and passed away next June. He believes she didn't have cancer, but died of a broken heart. Neil told the band he was taking a hiatus to travel and get over what happened. He travelled over 5,000 miles across North America in the next two years.

In 2002 Neil decided to return to the band so they went into the studio and wrote Vapor Trails. This album is full of emotion. When they wrote the album, they said their goal was just to release an album, so they didn't quite get the sound right with it. For years fans complained about the sound quality so in 2013 they Remixed the album.

Rush was back with a bang so they went on tour throughout 2002, When they were in Rio De Janeiro Brazil, on the 2nd to last night of the tour they figured that since they were on their first tour out after their hiatus, they should record a show. So after playing in the pouring rain the night before, they spent all day trying to dry out amps and instruments so they could perform. They rented a small video company to record the show, and because the show was performed and filmed under such poor cicrumstances the quality suffered greatly. This was the first time Rush has performed in Rio so the crowd was unreal. They sang along to everything and helped give Geddy the energy to carry on. This performance was originally released on DVD and will be included in the upcoming R40 box set for the first time in Blu-Ray.

In 2004 Rush released a cover album, Feedback, to give notice to the bands that they grew up playing. After this they went on a 30th anniversary tour The R30 tour. This tour is available on DVD, DVD special edition that included a CD. Both DVD versions do not include the entire show. Later on this tour was released on Blu-Ray and contained the entire set.

In 2012 they released their most recent album Clockwork Angels which is a concept album. Kevin J. Anderson also wrote, a book Clockwork Angels with Neil Peart's help, that tells the story of the album. They then embarked on a world tour to promote this album and brought along a String Ensemble to play along with them.

Edit: This site only allows two videos per post so I had to spread it out through many posts. Sorry about that. And I called this a brief history of Rush. It's impossible to write a brief story of any sort about a band that has 20 albums.

A new guy doesn't need this information. Let him enjoy the music first. Damn, you people go overboard. Too much info. Let him discover when he wants to. LESS IS MORE!

This also depends on what sort of person you are. I'm the type that loves to get to know the history and background about a band that I'm either really just getting into/like the personalities of the band's members. Although, I used to watch the old marathon runs of Behind the Music on VH-1 in the channel's heyday and got turned on to a bunch of bands through it...Just depends on the person really.

Okay. Before you do ANYTHING else, get Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures, and Signals. Those three albums are probably their most accessible, and their best. For live albums, Exit…Stage Left, Different Stages, and Rush in Rio are probably their best. Now prepare to crap your pants at how awesome this band is, and enjoy the ride.

If I made this topic, I would have abandoned ship by now. No way would I want this much of a response when it came to discovering something new.

Just listen to an album or two you saw mentioned the most in this topic, and then move on from there if you liked what you heard. If not, thanks for trying anways.
