Strangely enough I've been in a big Genesis Floyd Indulgence this weekend.

I'm sure many of you will state the obvious that comparing these two is "apples to oranges." Or some of you will say "why can't we just love both artists."

I love polling musicians against each other on here. It's fun! JMO

I love Banks so much but I think I have to give the edge to Richard. "Closer To The Edge?" Oh whoops! That's Wakeman!

Anyway I thought about this poll question and typed both keyboard players into my search engine. It's interesting to note that I pulled up a Top 100 Keyboard Players List by accident or by fate.

In the list Wright is 5th. Banks is 6th. Pretty strange eh?

Check it out!

I wish Banks and Rutherford would tour under the Genesis name without Phil!

I'm probably the only Genesis fanatic who loved "Calling All Stations!"

Then again "Halloween" is my all time favorite movie and I am totally in love with "Halloween III: Season Of The Witch."

I'm really twisted!

Personally I think Genesis is better off without Phil! Less POP more PROG!

Peter Gabriel is a BORE too now! I bought the deluxe version of "New Blood Live" in a big book format with cds and blu-rays!

I put that Blu Ray on the other night and I woke up drooling on myself at 3 am.

I will never understand Peter's hatred towards the old Genesis Canon.

The old bald dude doesn't perform shite from those epic albums!!!

That would be like David Lee Roth touring on the "Eat Em And Smile" record and not playing one old Van Halen tune!

WTF??????

I still buy every Peter Gabriel album but in all reality his solo stuff bores me to tears!!!

Signed,

"SHOCK THE MONKEY!"

The CAS album was okay, just the vocals were severely lacking without Phil IMO. What really burns me up now is that Hackett will be touring soon playing reworked Genesis songs...hey Steve, guess what? There are two other Genesis members, Tony and Mike..why not hook up with them and tour? I'm guessing that Tony quickly put a end to that thought since I sensed some friction between them at their Hall of Fame induction back in 2010.

Steve would, in a heartbeat. The problem was always Mr. Banks.

Banks, no story there.

I saw Hackett in Lugano couple years ago, did some Genesis songs but, call it what you will, Banks absence is a hole bigger than the sun! The piano part in Firth of Fifth was school-level. Would love to see Tony, Steve and Mike together again. Who would be the best vocalist? Fish? AHAHAHAH!!!!

Did you know that the keyboard intro to FoF was dropped by Genesis themselves because Banks couldn't play it?

Banks dislikes pre-80s Genesis with a passion, we are never going to see that reunion.

I'm a big EARLY Genesis fan, so for me, the nod goes to Tony. But, I do love the Floyd too, but I don't find it quite as progressive. I really like the odd time signitures, etc, and Floyd doesn't write as much as Genesis in that area.

I would LOVE to see Hackett and Banks on the same stage again. I wish some of these rich rockers would shove their personal feelings and egos in their ass and do something for the fans for once. I mean, really, FOR THE FANS.

From what I've read, Banks wouldn't play the intro on the electric piano they used on stage. The sound wasn't nearly as good as when he played it on a real piano.

No I didn't. I thought nothing was too difficult for Tony!!! ;)

That's odd. I'd expect Phil was the one who disliked the older songs. Why is that?

Dunno. We tend to blame the commercialisation of Genesis on Collins so presume that he hated the old stuff, when in fact it is Banks who doesnt want to play those songs.

Anyway, it's a moot point now as Phil Collins physically can't drum anymore because of a neck/spine problem.

That is what I had heard, too. The intro just wouldn't sound right not played on a real piano live, and they couldn't afford to bring a real piano live with them at the time, so they skipped the intro. And by the time they reached a point where they could afford to, he had forgotten how to play it.

Also, I don't think PG plays any Genesis stuff live - never really has - but I don't think it's because he doesn't like that stuff; it's just different from his solo stuff, and as a solo artist, he is playing his solo material. I don't see the problem with that.

And to answer the question, I love the playing of both Banks and Wright, but while I prefer Floyd as a band, I'll take Banks by a hair in the keyboards department.

You're very right about apples and oranges - very hard to compare. That said, Tony Banks is an absolutely brilliant progressive rock keyboard player, but Richard Wright was revolutionary and life-changing. He created atmosphere like no one else ever has. And besides that, while I love early Genesis, I'm a much bigger Floyd fan. Richard Wright easily - without giving it a tremendous amount of thought, he's probably my favorite keyboard player ever.

I just went through a Genesis marathon and am currently working my way through the Pink Floyd catalogue.

The thing I was struck with today is how major a part of Pink Floyd Richard Wright was, especially on those early recordings.

Still, I have to tip the scales in Tony Banks favour...his playing is simply amazing and blows me away in any Genesis era/style.

This is really tripping me out!! I am totally in a Genesis Pink Floyd Mode! Guess you can tell by my latest threads!

When "Duke" ends I have "The Wall" up next!! I have many cd pressings of this album but I always return to my Japan pressing gold MFSL cds. I have to turn up the volume higher but there is so much more warmth on this version!

I have my Japanese 3 cd The Wall "Experience" pressings in the mail. I am hoping they are the best to date!
