ILSnwdog
Every hear a song for the first time from a band that you have never heard of before...and the song totally blows your mind, and it turns you onto a new band with a whole library to explore? What songs were those? Here are the songs that blew me away and opened me up to what eventually became some of my favorite bands. Oblivion - Mastodon See A Little Light - Bob Mould Change (in the house of flies) - Deftones Debonair - The Afghan Whigs Struck A Nerve - Bad Religion Bread Fan - Budgie Unsung - Helmet Infra-Red - Placebo I'll Be You - The Replacements Only A Memory - The Smithereens And even though I had heard Fly By Night before, it was Bytor & The Snowdog that blew my mind and had such an effect on me that I had to discover more about Rush. Unattractive Truth
Blackest Eyes - Porcupine Tree. Thie first song of theirs I ever heard. Turned into a fan for life. They are now my second favorite band, behind Rush (of course). Let's Go - The Cars. I was 13 when I heard this song on the radio. I hadn't heard anything from their debut. But I loved this so much that Candy-O became the first album I ever bought with my own money. Us and Them - Pink Floyd. My uncle loaned me Dark Side of the Moon, and I remember just being stunned by the awesomeness of this song. I've been a Pink Floyd fan ever since. GangsterOnBoats
"Lawrence" by Camel has forever changed my guitar playing "The Things You See (When You Haven't Got Your Gun)" by Allan Holdsworth made me realize that the best guitarist on earth is living now "Giant Steps" by John Coltrane made me just love the saxophone (though I don't play it, I wish I did) "Close to the Edge" by Yes led me into the realization that Rick Wakeman and Steve Howe write their music like old composers: masterpieces "The Final Cut" by Pink Floyd showed me that Roger Waters is perhaps one of the most open and see through guys in music ever; his true feelings are shown to a greater extent than any other musician "Two of Us" and "I Want You" by the Beatles not only were the first two songs that got me into the Beatles, but also showed me that the band was musical geniuses in one group. "Surf's Up", "God Only Knows", and "Our Prayer" by the Beach Boys was when I realized that the Beach Boys were not just fun and games, but were truly some incredible artists. "Supper's Ready" by Genesis not only introduced me to the wild world of Peter Gabriel, but also introduced me to Steve Hackett's guitar virtuosity and Tony Banks' piano prowess. "The Rock" by the Who made me realize that Pete Townsend was a progressive rock mastermind when he wrote Quadrophenia. "Starless" by King Crimson taught me that a little can go a long way, but a lot will get you farther! "Water On The Brain- Part II" by Allan Holdsworth introduced me to the wonderful world of Jeff Berlin, the greatest bass player in the world. "U Can't Hold No Groove" by Victor Wooten made me realize what a good bassist is. Of course there are tons more, but I can't fit them all in here right now! Union 5-3992
"Far Cry" by Rush (I knew of them and a few of their hits, but when I heard this song, it kicked me in the balls and made me look a bit more closely at them.) "Good Times, Bad Times" by Led Zeppelin (This song is the first song I ever heard by them. I was big into hip-hop and popular music about 8 years ago when I was 10. This song was the first one I heard by them and it opened the door to a massive musical library that I probably wouldn't have discovered.) "Trains" by Porcupine Tree (This is the first song I heard by them and it has given me Steven Wilson, enough said) "Heaven & Hell" by Black Sabbath (This introduced me to Dio, which introduced me to Iron Maiden, which introduced me to Alice Cooper, etc.
