(as StormShadow posted earlier) here's a sample of the istockphoto image that Hugh used to source the minute/hour hands:

I sure hope Rush didn't pay him more than a few hundred bucks for that cover

(that said, the interior panels I've seen look far more ambitious and interesting...)

Didn't someone say it would cost 100 grand for Hugh album cover art? confused13.gif

laugh.gif I wouldn't pay him 100 washers for that... smash.gif

Look at the bevel on the back part of the hour hand. laugh.gif

For the record, beveling can be achieved using paint brushes wink.gif

This is true. But, if you were actually creating this with oil paint, you would likely get the light source right, rather than muck it up by copy / paste.

I really would've preferred that they photographed this "clock" with actual physical props. Maybe with some more steampunkish gears. This is just too fakey looking and I believe the primary original purpose for the design of this image was to be for animated videos rather than an album cover. Choosing it for the album cover was probably a last minute decision, especially considering the detailed hand-crafted feel of the other images.

...the center of the swirl especially indicates, to me, that this was acheived by hand, not computer..."

very interesting, as that center swirl specifically indicates (to me) that it is 100% digital

from one of the paintings you referenced as an example (below):

http://www.amberas.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/IMG_3341-1024x620.jpg

I created this:

http://i.imgur.com/tsnMu.jpg

1. Effects > Adjust > Desaturate

2. Effects > Adjust > Brightness/Contrast/Intensity

3. Effects > Replace Colors (in this case, red) adjust hue/saturation/lightness

5. Bitmaps > Distort > Swirl > Counterclockwise (Whole Rotation: 0 | Additional Degrees: 90... exaggerated to show the technique)

30-45 seconds work

That's hardly a compelling response.

The clock hands are quite obviously stock images, as referenced several times in this thread today.

6 minutes in Photoshop. I'm not doing the clock hands because those are so obviously 'shopped that it's not worth proving.

Difference clouds -> Hue/Saturation layer -> Filter: Distort: Twirl

I spent a minute or two playing around with the contrast and painting out some of the darker areas.

Wow, that's embarrassing for Hugh Syme. 6 minutes?

I know I said earlier in the thread that I didn't care, but it's very disappointing considering the effort the band have put into recording it and the effort Roadrunner are putting in to promoting it.

And I'll be clear: what I did wasn't all that close to the real album cover as a finished product. My only point in posting it was that I did it in 6 minutes. Give me two weeks or a month, and I could probably come up with something that would rival the album cover. It's not that hard, just time consuming, to make realistic clouds and then twirl them just a bit in the center (I over-twirled mine, but only because I wasn't looking at the cover as a reference).

You're gonna need a hell of a lot more minutes than 6. wink.gif

As long as the music is good, I can forgive the lame cover.

This being said,

Do you think that Def Leppard's great sounding, "Songs From the Sparkle Lounge" would have sold better if it didn't have such a lame title?

Hmm?

Absolutely it would have. My first reaction to seeing that title (and seeing the cover) was extremely negative, and I went into my first listen of that album expecting it to be terrible. I wasn't exactly disappointed, but I'm pretty sure if my midset had been more positive I would have liked it (at least a little) more.

Ah, I get it now. If this was a Hugh Syme design for anyone other than Rush you wouldn't have any problems with danielmclark's efforts...

It didn't require a compelling response.

So what if they are the same symbols?

The assumtion that Huigh Syme must have lifted them directly off that site is a bit of a stretch, guys.
