10/10 The best science fiction movies I've seen in years and arguably Marvel's best movie yet. The first two acts are basically a spiritual successor to Star Wars.

Gravity.

Despite the overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics, I've been hearing mixed reviews from everyone else. Finally got to see it last night, and I rather liked it. Very convincing and artful visuals (the long unbroken shot that opens the movie is unreal), a lean 90 minute running time, and something I didn't expect -- a performance from Sandra Bullock that I really liked.

^ biggest complaints:

-Ryan's character can be seen as a bland copy of "The Driver's", or as a less defined version.

-The mother's character is intended to be out of hand and offensive, and congratulations! This is achieved! This doesn't make it good however. Not in the slightest.

-Back to the "art house" point, it's way too exaggerated. Too much symbolism and too many artsy dreamy sequences.

All that this film is is what I had hoped it not to be, Nicolas Refn trying too damn hard to make another film sort of like "Drive".

This film is just a really piss poor "Drive 2", and it's painful to associate this bad work with that grand work.

I'm reminded of that one South Park episode... "We must protect movies from their directors".

Only God Forgives is one of those movies I like but I can understand why some people hate it. Scarface (1983) is another one that tends to be divisive from what I've read.

Speaking of Drive, I'm not even a soundtrack guy but I just LOVE that soundtrack. Has sort of a Tangerine Dream vibe to it. Had no idea the guy who scored it was the drummer for Red Hot Chili Peppers on their 1st two albums. Jack Irons was supposed to be the main guy but he had commitment to another band at the time.

The Couch Trip is an unsung comedy classic.

Cobra meanwhile is almost a parody of itself, even for Stalone this is daft. And it has another of those annoying 80's pop soundtracks which makes your eyes roll with each song. The most interesting thing about the film is it reunites Andrew Robinson (Scorpio Killer) and Reni Santoni (Detective Chico Gonzalez) from Dirty Harry.
