didn't read the posts in the thread, just gonna say MTV sucks and any human being who sits down and honest-to-goodness watches it now in 2011 is terrible and soulless and should go read a book or, even better, listen to rush

I hate MTV. (What does the "M" stand for?)

Just stumbled onto this one while surfing some old MTV vids. The Aussie band Divinyls, where the female singer Chrissy Amphlett used to use a neon microphone stand as a prop, and also known mainly for the tune 'I Touch Myself'. They were crap mostly but the song (All the) 'Boys in Town' stands out as one that I remember from back then.

She looks a lot better today in this interview, she was pretty skanky back in the 80's.

When MTV was popular - we didn't have cable. I basically didn't have cable until after 2001. If you lived in NYC, you did not need cable if free network channels were available. So there was

2,4,7 cbs, nbc, abc

5, 11, 9 wnew, wpix, wwor

13, 21, 31 (PBS stations)

41, 47 (spanish channels)

sometimes 51 and sometimes 68 (anyone remember U68?)

I watched a lot of sports and a lot of PBS, whether I wanted to or not...

Watching this retro MTV for me is interesting. There are video's I didn't even know were ever made. Many... and why? unsure.gif and TV shows I have never heard of.

and the clothes, and the hairdo's - mullett martians everywhere! scared.gif

I will say watching the past MTV is more interesting watching today's MTV, which I'm suprised the network still exists today - seriously. I'd fire everybody and start over again.

I thought 'shoe gaze' and 'grunge' were the same genre.

shoe gaze = jesus and mary chain, my bloody valentine, cocteau twins

grunge = tad, mudhoney, obviously nirvana, shit like that

And now they have nu-gaze.

Most shoe gazers where out of the UK. Most grunge bands were out of the US.

I much prefer shoe gazers to grunge.

Me too. I'm not too familiar with their music but the Velvet Underground was probably the first to create music like shoe gaze. Atmospheric, distorted, abstract - what heroin would be if it were music.

If you like Shoe Gazers...check out these guys (not you Kelly...I know that you are familiar with this band).

Thanks for the clarification. I just remember a lot of the grunge acts would stare down at the floor while playing as well as the shoe gaze acts.

Meant to post this Tuesday. Turn on vh1classic Tuesday afternoon, after the repeated hyped up night monkey 2 and spring break no doubt jenny mccarthy with pat benatar howl....

Tonight It's You, Cheap Trick....music videos as they were meant to be, just music vids with breaks for advertising about shit you may or may not wanna buy

See, this past weekend truly WAS Empty V so much more could have been done in celebration, so so so much video footage never shown and time wasted on replay

Here's a pretty decent 24 hour all music channel that plays videos from the 60s to the present with a nice mix of artists and styles. For those of us who grew up with MTV in the 80s, there's the "80s at 8" every weeknight. They also have programs such as "Retro Rewind" (60s/70s music on Monday evenings), "Nineties Nectar" (Tuesday evenings), "From The Road" (live performance clips), and a heavy rock hour (Tuesday & Thursday evenings) among others.

This is what I was trying to remember. laugh.gif Cool TV. It's worth checking out, I guess, if you enjoy music vids. (:

We have had this on our over the air channels on TV for a while now. It's pretty good. I also just boot up Windows Media Center and find it on there sometimes when I want to watch the 80's at Eight. wink.gif

Who cares! Jersey Shore is almost on!

I know you're joking, but that really is the worst show on probably all of TV these days.

If we can get everyone to tune into AWKWARD and TEEN WOLF and ignore all the other shows on MTV, maybe they'll create a few more scripted shows... you know, comedies, dramas, scifis (I can hope.. or else what is Teen Wolf? tongue.gif), or ANYTHING. I've given up on MTV having any kind of a music scene.

But Teen Wolf is actually worth watching.
