I'm interested in finding out which lyrics really impacted you in such away that made you just say, "Wow! This song speaks to me on so many levels, it's like it was written for me."

This is a tough one for me because there are a few songs I can think of, so I will post some lyrics when I narrow them down.

Just maybe post the lyrics and kind of explain why those lyrics hit you the way they did.

Happy posting! 2.gif

No lyrics feel like they were written for me. But there are some that speak to me:

Bravado: Last year, when I was feeling particularly angry and frustrated about DADT, I went for an angry walk, listening to some of Rush's most raucous songs to help me vent. I walked so far and so hard that I hurt the morning after. But Bravado came up on the shuffle and made me stop and take a breath. This song's lyrics gave me hope and re-affirmed my determination.

Resist: The line "I can learn to close my eyes to anything but injustice" is kind of the story of my life. blush4.gif

Anagram: Because I love word puzzles, I found this lyric especially delightful.

Everyday Glory: Some of my very favorite lyrics....

If the future's looking dark

We're the ones who have to shine

If there's no one in control

We're the ones who draw the line

Though we live in trying times -

We're the ones who have to try

Though we know that time has wings -

We're the ones who have to fly

Right on, Pratt wub.gif

If the future's looking dark
We're the ones who have to shine
If there's no one in control
We're the ones who draw the line
Though we live in trying times -
We're the ones who have to try
Though we know that time has wings -
We're the ones who have to fly

This is exactly what I was going to post. I still get shivers everytime I listen to this part of the song!

Also, recently noticed a particular line from 'We Hold On':

"How many times must another line be drawn?"

I always end up exploring that idea a little more than the snippet in the song warrants.

My fav lyric ever. wub.gif wub.gif

You can try, but you may not always succeed, but if you don't try, you can never succeed.

So true. yes.gif

On a non-Rush note, Time (Pink Floyd) also has some of my favorite lyrics ever. wub.gif

Id have to go with Hemispheres. The reason being, it really marked my 1st real awareness of lyrics with a higher level of substance and story telling.

These are all great lyrics and it is cool to see the different ways in which they reach people. Keep it up. smile.gif

For me Subdivisions has lyrics that really say something to me:

"Growing up it all seems so one-sided

Opinions all provided

The future pre-decided

Detached and subdivided

In the mass production zone"

This is exactly how I view things right now, it's like Peart took the thoughts right out of my head (even though I wasn't born when he wrote this laugh.gif )

Also (see Freewill)

"A planet of playthings

We dance on the strings

Of powers we cannot perceive

"The stars aren't aligned -

Or the gods are malign"

Blame is better to give than receive."

There is so much insight and intellect in this particular part, as well as the rest of the song, that it is hard not to just sit back and wrap your head around it for awhile. Peart has such a gift and it is a rarity in this day in age.

I think I'm...I'm going bald.

tongue.gif

i can't say they were influential to me but as i have gotten older the lyrics really ring true. not the bald part, as i still have a full head of hair but

Once we loved the flowers

Now we ask the price of the land

Once we would take water

But now it must be wine

Now we've been

And now we've seen

What price peace of mind

Take a piece of my mind

thats some good shit right there! 2.gif

"Subdivisions" definitely. It came out at just the right time when I started junior high. Cliques began at this time and I wanted escape!

"Middletown Dreams" and "Mission", which I consider to be two songs that tell a story, much like Bytor and Snowdog and Necromancer. Dreams can help propel you but it is up to you to put forth the effort in at least attempting to realize your dreams and goals.

"Turn the Page" To me, this is a song about life changes over the course of time - changing who we associate with, moving to a different town, graduation from high school and college, career changes, getting married, having children - much like pictures in a scrapbook. We move forward but often take pleasure in looking back at those things and people that are no longer in our lives due to the different paths we eventually take.

But I believe there's a ghost of a chance

We can find someone to love and make it last....

(Time stand still)

I'm not looking back

But I want to look around me now

(Time stand still)

See more of the people and the places that surround me now

Freeze this moment a little bit longer

Make each impression a little bit stronger

Freeze this motion a little bit longer

The innocence slips away

The innocence slips away...

Summer's going fast, nights growing colder

Children growing up, old friends growing older

Freeze this moment a little bit longer

Make each sensation a little bit stronger

Experience slips away

Experience slips away...

The innocence slips away

hmmm...Good question.

i'm gonna start off with these 5 lyrics:

1) Working Man ( I heard this song on the radio in 74,

and it just hit me like a 2 by 4 over the head..boom.

I was in my 4th year as a newspaper boy. Did it for 5.

Anyway, the lyric's fit my daily situation, no doubt.)

2) The Trees (I always loved the outdoor's , growin' up.

We used to go campin' all the time, so the love of nature,

and conserving the natural landscape/resource's, made sense to me. Tree's have to be protected at all cost..for future generation's)

3) Natural Science ( Great concept-intriguing lyric's.The beginning

of it is classic..the sound of the gull's and seashore..awesome! applaudit.gif

I'm a poet/lyricist, so words are very important to any song I hear.)

4) Spirit Of Radio ( This song to me is total freedom, while hitting

the open road and listening to your favorite song's on the radio..

not a care in the world...just ROCKIN!///and the beginning riff is just

pure genius...I remember buying the LP on 1-1-80, and thinking

wow..the 80's are going to hold so much promise aka: KICK A*S!!) yes.gif

5) Camera Eye ( Being an Amatuer abstract Photographer, this

song just resonated with me..all the lyrical image's and reflection's..

....Brilliant!) new_thumbsupsmileyanim.gif yes.gif

I could go on and on..but I wont! ( Thank God, right?) wink.gif

All of those songs are great.

I'm with you, I love the intellect and poetry in songs like natural science. I wish I would put a pen to paper more often than I do, kudos to you for engaging in poetry and lyric-writing. new_thumbsupsmileyanim.gif

- Freewill: Choosing your own path instead of being bound by fate or predestination. Also protesting superstition.

- Marathon: Giving your best. Ability and effort are what makes it- not random luck.

- Prime Mover: Pure Deist song. Praising creativity.

- Mission: Praising dreams and imagination.

- Subdivisions: Sadly, I was the one that got cast out.

- Time Stand Still: But I think this one speaks to everyone.

- The Pass: Sadly, I have considered it sad.gif Why? I was afraid (because of being told by too many people/institutions) that I would not find what I truly wished for the most because I was predestined (is that a word?) for something else. Something that I did not enjoy or was good at.

- Subdivisions: Sadly, I was the one that got cast out.

I hope in time, like me, you'll be GLAD you were cast out. People who do something like that are TOXIC, and not at all good to be around. They did you a favor, and sold themselves short.

Mine? There are far too many, so I'm just going with one of my favorites. I realize it's from the most overplayed song that not too many fans like because of it, but...

Change one pronoun, and this describes me and my circumstances better than anyone or anything ever has:

"Always hopeful, yet discontent/she knows changes aren't permanent/but change is".

I'm a person who is not easily satisfied, often bored, and always wanting a new experience, yet at the same time wishing for something I can count on. Change has been that one thing through the years that has given me the most hope, second chances, opportunities, and resolution.

Now the patience to wait until change brings those around? or the ambition to cause change? That will always be a challenge...

Every word of 2112, starting with "What can this strange device be..?" and ending with "WE HAVE ASSUMED CONTROL".

Inspired an entire freaking novel. Few songs can do that.

Also, Cut to the Chase and Double Agent, inspired my latest writing project. And Circumstances before that -- though more subtly.

Basically, if it's inspired a piece or two out of me you can count it pretty darn influential.

Thought of a few more:

Heresy: The last verse. As a Baby Boomer, it hits me particularly hard. Living with the threat of nuclear war over our heads every day.... unsure.gif

Tai Shan: I know this feeling. Of being in a place, of having it "sing" to me. The first time I was in Hawai'i - the Big Island - I stood on a hillside overlooking Keahou and felt the history, the story of the place. When I first heard this song, I cried. Because here was that feeling put into words for me.

High Water: Another song that reminded me of Hawai'i. I love to snorkel and swim with my fishie buddies. The first time I heard "the water takes you home" I cried (yeah, I do that a lot - some of you know why). Here, again, someone was describing the feeling I had in perfect words and music. wub.gif

Mission speaks to me all the time.

That song makes me want to be great at anything I do.

Truly inspirational.
