From first to less

Les Claypool

Victor Wooten

Geddy Lee

Flea

Stefan Lessard

I wasn't a fan of Entwhistle's style. Les Claypool I could listen to play unaccompanied all day. What an amazing bassist.

Tied for #1.....

Geddy Lee-Best bassist who uses his fingers

Chris Squire-Best bassist who uses a pick

#2.....Greg Lake

#3.....John Entwhistle

#4.....James Jamerson (the Funk Brothers)

#5.....Whoever is playing that amazingly nasty, almost incomprehensible bass line on the song "Whatever Gets You Through The Night", by John Lennon. (The funkiest bass line ever!) wacko.gif confused13.gif smash.gif fing.gif unsure.gif doh.gif

There's so many bassists that are great, but I couldn't listen to them without any accompaniment. Geddy is in that category. People like Les Claypool and Victor Wooten, I can listen to solo for hours. For video of both, check out Claypools '5 Gallons of Deisel', and for Wooten, check out "Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Live at the Quick". Both great DVD's.

My personal faves:

Geddy Lee: No explanation required.

John Entwistle: One of the first really dynamic bass players and a influence on Geddy Lee.

Chris Squire: great sound and innovative player.

Steve Harris: I just love IM's galloping bass lines.

Dave Meros (Spock's Beard): Not the most technical, but I love his originality.

Geezer Butler: I always like the way he filled up Black Sabbath's sound.

Les Claypool: Anybody who can make a bass sound like that deserves a nod.

Other notables, but not necessarily my favorites: Stu Hamm, Tony Levin, Mark King, Jaco Pastorius, Victor Wooten, Steve Bailey, Billy Sheehan...
