Worked from home today so that allowed to once more open up the moving box's and whatever was on top of the stack was pulled out to listen to.  First out:

Gilbert & Sullivan - The Mikado

Another opereta.  A 2 LP box set.  Ok at best.  Next out of the box:

Gilbert & Sullivan - The Gondoliers

Another opereta.  2 LP box set.  Yawn.  Last out of the box:

Bach - Keyboard Concerti

An LP containing some of Bach's keyboard Concerto's.  Its classical, so thats a plus.  But Piano music, even by Bach, not my cup of tea.  Basically a yawn.

Not really a satisfying day musically.

Styx - Kilroy Was Here

I wish I loved this, but I don’t.

As a concept album it fails completely. I’m not sure if the problem is more that Dennis DeYoung isn’t capable of pulling one off or that the rest of the band had no interest in doing one and that held him back. I suspect a bit of both were at play. Ironically, many decades later, an aging post-DeYoung Styx would nail the concept album thing on The Mission. At any rate, the pacing doesn’t work, the theatrics are more corny than endearing at least half the time, and really no one in this band is a brilliant enough singer for Broadway, so it’s just unfortunate that musical theater is the vocabulary they try to use to pull of the concept. And I am far and away no expert on musical theater, but I can’t imagine a staged version of this lasting much past opening night in the professional world. No need to really get into the plot or story; they’re not as deep or well executed as they think they are. I’ll say this though, I do like the idea of a fun campy musical about taking down authority through the power of rock and roll, and I also think there’s some nugget of interest in the plight of Kilroy disguised as a robot. But I’d want it to get more radical. Mr. Roboto could kick off a totally different story about a robot who has achieved consciousness but hides it to save himself from being dismantled or something. Then again Rush already did something like that better in The Body Electric, just like they already did the rock and roll revolution thing better in 2112. Sigh, lol.

Aaaaannnyyyway. I actually do enjoy a number of the songs here, divorced from the loose concept. Don’t Let It End is a great power ballad, and Haven’t We Been Here Before is a perfect duet. Tommy and Dennis play off each other immaculately there. I also really do enjoy the high camp of Mr. Roboto, and I have a soft spot for Heavy Metal Poisoning even if it makes me cringe. Plus the instrumental performances are generally great. Both JY and Tommy rip it up in classic Styx fashion, and Dennis’s keyboards sit at a lavish midpoint between prog and new wave. Dare I say tasteful, lol? I don’t love this record, but I do like a lot of it.

It's still not an album I love. I barely like it. But...it has charm. It's still my least favourite Styx album.

But has he finished eating it yet? Are we all now inside Jimmy? Certainly the weather indicates it could be the case...

Taylor Swift- The Tortured Poets Department

The more I listen to this, the less I give a shit about Taylor's apparent lack of experimentalism. 31 songs and I love them all.

Styx Paradise Theatre

Honestly this is one of my least fav Styx albums......there i said it.  Nothing really grabs me.  I mean it has Snowblind and Too Much Time On My Hands which i love and she Cares is a great melodic song by Tommy.  BUT that's about it.  I find this record WAY WAY WAAAAAAY more annoying than Kilroy. Dennis is just spreading his not quite rockers all over this album.  and BTW EP'S right he's far worse when he's Rocking.  like on the opener.

ROCK-A-ROCK-AROCK-ROCK........LET'S ROCK!!!!!!!!!

shut up Dennis, lol

this record's cringe.

So is kilroy but i will take that every day over this.

Okay but wait this is actually almost my favorite Styx album

I think the concept here works for me because it’s so light and doesn’t burden anyone’s songwriting too much. Like, it’s pretty much just Rocking The Paradise that even directly has to be about the theater story, and the rest doesn’t need any concept to make sense. Plus the band just sounds much happier here, and the songs are better. Dennis is over the top when he’s on his rockers, but then that works for me here. Maybe I was too quick to judge him the other day, lol. To each their own though.

It might just be a mood thing because when I first got into Styx Mick was definitely a massive fan of PT and I remember he hated on Kilroy, lol

Fans hated on Reputation and Lover, and now Lover is her most streamed album with her biggest hit single in years just a year ago and Reputation is her most excitedly awaited reboot and retroactively a big fat fan fave.

TTPD is a great album, I only think it came out too soon. It's not a record aimed at making hit singles, which seems to be reflective of most of the releases from pop girlie's this year.

The Beatles- Help!

Honestly...this, AHDN, Rubber Soul and Revolver are still, to me, the four best albums of the Beatles career. f**k I love them.
