I love that performance ... Geddy in full blown Janis Joplin mode

Fiery band they were, and Alex was inspired, to say the least ..... A great start, and even though they were raw, you could see the growth potential that they had .. Love it

Thanks for posting this, zappafrank. Great stuff!

Love the emcee's hair and clothes. You might be right about Eugene Levy!

And Rutsey not only rocks the kit, but rocks that awesome jacket as well.

There's a link in the description that'll take you to another 1974 TV performance, this time with NP on drums. Well worth checking out!

My darling wife loves the Laura Secord Easter eggs. I think they taste like old grey ass, but to each their own!

You see the youthful tendency to speed up during songs, especially Working Man. At some point, I was expecting someone's head to explode.

The polite Canadian kids in the audience were amusing as well. Stay seated, clap politely, don't make a scene. Very Canadian.

I guess the story behind this footage is that is was unknown until the high school was cleaning out their audio/visual archive room and found it. That would flip me out.

I won't ask how you're able to make that characterization...

Not quite IIRC, it was discovered in a box in the SRO office when they were scouring the archives for material for Beyond The Lighted Stage.

I think the story was the box had been marked "Pink Pop" and the video cassette was some ancient format that couldn't be played and had to be sent to the Netherlands to be converted to DVD. When they got it back it was a real jaw dropper!

It certainly flabbergasted me when I saw the film, I never thought there was any footage of them with John on drums. I had seen a flakey still photo of the Bandstand gig before (in the biography "Chemistry") but that was it.

If I was Geddy I'd be giving Neil some nasty looks and telling him to slow down a bit.

you mean John-------^ right? Neil would not appreciate nasty looks since he would have been in the audience or backstage at this point.

I'm not so sure that Al is the one doing the speeding up.

I remember hearing a Tom Sawyer bootleg where they were speeding up and then hearing 'slow down!' and eventually getting back to the normal tempo.

I'm guessing this has already been posted before, but in case not, holy crap, this is awesome!

I wonder if this was the inspiration for Mel's Rockpile.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qezwXjFpW-g

That's been on YouTube for years.

I LOVE it.

My grade school assemblies never had anything as cool as that. Lucky kids.

Apparently playing middle school assemblies was "a thing" then in Toronto for bands. F***ing cool.

It would be fascinating to hear from someone who attended a thing like this.

After watching this (and apparently it's actually on the R40 Blu-Ray set? Not the concert tour set, but the re-release of Rush in Rio, etc etc). I was surprised to see "Best I can" pre-dated Neil. Looking at the credits, it was purely a Geddy song through and through. Was really cool to see a different interpretation of it with John on drums.

An old fogey at 41, you just don't get cool shit like this anymore.

I bet it would be a real trip for anyone who was there to suddenly not only see the footage, but on a slim chance maybe spot themselves in the audience.

Me too. He said he wasn't even aware of Rush at that point, but probably would have enjoyed the hell out of that show.

I think we’re talking about two different videos.
