Chris Elliott, the adult newspaper boy ... Chris' real life father Bob Elliott was a comedic genius himself, and portrayed Chris' Dad in this surreal and hysterical series .. The two together were fantastic, as was the entire cast

I know that it's still very early in this series' run, and it's a very self-indulgent pick. But few shows have ever made me as happy, so quickly, as The Orville has. Representing a resurrection of the "optimistic future" genre, in an era where industry standards only seem interested in advancing a grimdark, cynical visage; The Orville represents a future worth waking up to. Its humor may tack a bit to the juvenile side, but is tempered with thoughtful stories, and genuinely likable characters. Definitely my favorite new show this year, and one that I hope gets to keep exploring for some time.

 

I've very much enjoyed this show so far but I couldn't put on a best tv shows list just yet. The ads for it did not do it justice as it gave the impression it was gonna be like a comedy version of Star Trek. Turns out the show is more serious and the humor is put in the right places. Hope the show last for a while as I think there are plenty of good things they can get into with it. As long as Seth McFarlane is willing to do it, I think it will stick around for a bit.

Was sad to hear that Robert Guillaume passed away today, and sad to admit that I hadn't thought of his wonderful lead role as Benson DuBois in some time. His snarky deadpan portrayal of a butler (who would ascend to governor) anchored one of the best sitcoms of the early 80s. And that theme music... Top notch!

153-- The Americans (2013-present). Set in the early 80s, Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys are a married couple of Russian-born spies living in America with their 2 American-born kids. Noah Emmerich is great as the neighbour and FBI agent who's unknowingly working against his friends. There's as much tension in the family dynamic such as keeping the kids from finding out they're spies as there is in the intrigue/action parts. Great supporting cast including Margo Martindale, Richard (The Waltons) Thomas, Frank Langella, Alison Wright, Lev Gorn and Annet Mahendru (who should be a bigger star already with her looks, ability to speak 6 languages and being a brown belt in karate).

I feel a bit weird including an internet show here, but with streaming media, the line is very blurred these days. Norm MacDonald Live subverts the traditional hourlong interview show, delving deep into ridiculous career stories of a wide varierty of guests from Caitlin Jenner to Gilbert Gottfried. Norm MacDonald's sense of humor colors the entire program, and his folksy, faux ignorance plays extremely well through the interviews. The best moments of the show often come in the "jokes" segment, where Norm and his guest read a number of pre-written (for lack of a better term) "anti-jokes" with purposefully 'bad' punchlines.

 

"I used to think Revenge was a dish best served cold... but then I realized it meant getting back at somebody."

 

"It's weird watching the Flintstones lately. With their stone age drive in movies and caveman bowling, it all feels so dated."

 

"Whenever someone says 'I have a couple irons in the fire.' I think, 'Is one of them a job writing blacksmithing metaphors?'"

 

"I recently had a picture framed. Now it's doing time upstate for armed robbery."

The PGA Tour West Coast Swing is still available. I remember (as I'm sure you do) when the Crosby, Hope, Andy Williams and the LA Open were televised (I think all by ABC). I loved the theme song they used (was it "The Sound of Philadelphia" maybe?), it was very calming.

I am pretty sure The Sound Of Philadelphia was the theme song for Soul Train. I have the music in my head from those golf broadcasts but can't think of the name of the tune. The Hope otherwise known as the birdiefest of all time. Make one bogey and you feel like a 20 handicap lol...
