GnR and VH are about equal bands in my book, like them both pretty much.

But I have to say the GNR style of music is ballsier and more raw than VH.

The album 1984 has one synthpop tune I'll Wait(which doesn't fit at all on one HARD ROCK album) and beside that Van Halen has a few poppy tunes in their catalog with DLR and many more those kind of tunes with Hagar, while all GnR songs on Appetite are gritty and pretty raw hard rock. That's the main reason why I would maybe take GnR over Van Halen - all the way!

And the album AFD was influenced by: AC/DC, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, The Who and Cheap Trick.

And BTW VH are widely considered as the main influence on the 80's hair bands wave(which I strongly dislike).

The only GnR album I like is Chinese Democracy and that's because Buckethead and Bumblefoot are on it. That and that alone makes it worthwhile. If they made an album now with the current revolving door line-up I wouldn't be buying it.

I dont know what you mean. More people were hired and fired during the making of that than Enron.

Yeah but my point is I'm not interested in the rest of them, just Bucket and Thal.

Bucket and Thal had about as much to do with Guns' legacy as Gary Cherone did Van Halen's ... probably even less

At least Gary Cherone accomplished something outside of VH

He did?

Very entertaining minute long interview in which Axl manages to come across as both harsh and funny

When all was said and done, too bad he couldn't back all this up

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2VBAJbDGdBE

I mentioned it before on TRF and I might've even asked you, but did you ever see that late 80s/early 90s interview with Vince Neil in which he challenges Axl to a boxing match? I can't remember exactly why but I assume both of them were being a-holes and were offended by each other. I remember Vince looking into the camera and being as icy cool and menacing as he could (which is basically impossible ;) ) then saying something cheesy like "It's time to put up or shut up Axl. Let's get into the ring and settle this thing like men."

If he was serious, it was total crap.

If it was some kind of promotional non-news, it was total crap.

It wasn't a boxing match. It was a fight.

At first glance I thought it was his gross tongue sticking out.

I was wrong. It's his gross jaw jutting out. Welcome to the jungle.

I think we're straying off topic

This is not about how Axl looks now or how he and Vince Neil were going to have some slap fight

It's Appetite vs 1984

Grunge didn't expose 80s metal, Guns n Roses did .... They also opened the door for bands like The Black Crowes

:o

Haha...I actually won't disagree with that, because I can see the logic.

The Crowes were much kinder to their audiences than Guns were, though.

Well, most of the time. :P

Haha...well, I saw them quite a few times when I was clean and sober, and quite a few other times before then. Had more fun clean and sober!

Good catch, though. Haha...I didn't even think of the connotation. I guess that's how far removed I am from back when I was 'kind'. ;)

Right right, TRF threads always stays on topic. :P

I'll say this straight off: 1984 wasn't as good as some of VH's albums that preceded it but I still find it much more enjoyable than Appetite.

Guitars...EASILY...1984 > Appetite

Vocals....EASILY...1984 > Appetite

Roth was never one of my favorite singers but he fit VH's sound perfectly in those early days.

Axl's vocals...I didn't like them the first time I heard them. Screeching in the negative sense for me. Holding some of the notes as he did, yup I hated that.

Some have already mentioned Appetite's influence on music. Okay. But isn't that straying from the topic too ((this being a vs thread and not an influence on music thread))? As an album unto itself, Appetite didn't mean anything to me when it was released. Still doesn't.

Also, someone mentioned 1984's influence on 80s music so there's that if you want to go that route.

Then there was the comment on 1984 being too commercial. Is Hot For Teacher really all that commercial? I'm not sure I know what that word really means now. If 1984 is commercial then I'll still take it over Appetite.

I know that Guns N Roses presented a dirtier and grittier style than Hair metal bands, but other than that, what was so innovative or genre-defining about Appetite for Destruction? I think the album is good, but far from groundbreaking or original.

With1984 the Roth-era well was running dry, but there's more energy and sincerity in "Panama" alone for me to prefer it over Appetite for Destruction.

I think 1984 is a bland and ultra commercial album. To me it sounds like the template for all future empty headed hair metal bands like...yes...Bon Jovi or Warrant. Appetite had grit and swagger and a persuasive senses of passion and youth. I don't like it much either but it has a spark about it that it shares with albums such as Van Halens debut or Nevermind. It just has an "it" factor.

I remember not being able to avoid the damn album. Yes, it was huge and inspirational for, unbelievably, millions of fans, it's a classic album. I just don't hear it. I think it has to do with Axl Rose. I don't find his singing appealing and I think his lyrics are atrocious. I find him an extremely overrated artist.

You and me both. I do understand that albums appeal though, but at the same time in a year where a band like Kings X came along with a breathtaking debut and...flopped hard...it makes me scratch my head a little.

To me the debut GnR album was a lot less fun than RATT OR Dokken.
