Bands: 70's good / 80's bad

Another thread about the best year in the 70's for album releases got me thinking about the seismic shift in the music industry the 80's. Bands that I liked went through a massive inflection point in their sound in the early 80's (Rush, Yes, King Crimson, etc.) There were various reasons and circumstances - but clearly MTV and other forces were at play to change the market. I did continue to like the bands I mentioned above; However, there were other bands that I really liked their 70's output, but the change in the 80's was just too much to bear...

A few that spring to mind: Genesis (after 83), ZZ Top, Heart & Aerosmith

Full disclosure, I'm a drummer and prefer real instruments to machines any day. I also prefer guitar driven music to synths. Though, going to high school in the 80's I can't help but be nostalgic over some songs, etc. I don't hate the 80's - but given the choice, I'd take 70's anyday.

I'm curious what other bands had changed so much that you just couldn't stomach them in the 80's.

Also, were there any bands that were around in the 70's that got significantly better in the 80's?

Well, for me, Cheap Trick.

They were way better in the 70's. There 80's stuff is not bad, but I prefer the 70's way way more.

There 80's stuff is way to mixed.

A mix of hard rock, rock, pop, and power pop. Just to much change.

I disagree. I love the eighties albums.

I don't know how they are so bad and Dire Straits are so good.

I don't get that comparison at all. unless you're referring to Dire Straits smash Brothers in arms album. which is poop as well.

otherwise 2 TOTALLY different bands

Every 70s band that I can think of (that I like) went downhill in the 80s.

But it is pretty much true of any band in that after achieving success in their first 5 albums or so, that their older material is better than their newer stuff.

Of the performers that come to mind right away that got better, most were new or only semi established near the end of the 70s ...

Motorhead, Social Distortion, The Cure, Killing Joke - they all continued in a very respectable way

After Stiv Bators left the Dead Boys, he formed Lords Of The New Church, which, while not punk in the way the Dead Boys were, they put out some really great albums .. He transitioned well

Tough category, because many bands sh*t the bed as the 80s went on, but didn't at first.

Rush was better in the early 80s than ever before. They were not good at the end of the 80s.

Black Sabbath was great in the 70s and early 80s. Not so much after 1982.

Kiss, for me, actually hit a bit of a high note with Creatures, Lick it Up and Animalize. I probably think that because I like early 80s metal, which those 3 albums were.

Queen. aside from a couple albums i can't get behind their 80's stuff.

Spoiled on that 70's run,

Mick

Fifth Harmony are better than Queen.

AC/DC was another one that I think got much worse.

Though perhaps my original intent was bands that made a conscious shift in their sound vs. decline. Of course, most bands will decline over time - but the change in the early 80's was a like a switch. Bands that were going strong in the late 70's drastically changed their approach to sucking; this wasn't a true decline. Maybe AC/DC was just decline from a lack of growth / diversity in their sound.

Grade 7 and 8 sucked because my fave bands all laid these eggs:

Blondie - Autoamerican (1980): Where did the rock go? Not much grit or edge here.

Rush - Signals (1982): Moving PIctures hooked me into buying everything up to that point, and this turned me off buying any more. Where did the rock go? What's with the keyboards?

Cheap Trick - All Shook Up (1980): They still rocked, but the material was starting to suffer. It had a couple cool tunes at least.

Queen - Hot Space (1982): What the hell did Ming the Merciless do to these guys? Where did the rock go? 'Body Language'??? This one sucked so bad I scratched it and returned it for something else.

Devo - post-Freedom of Choice (1981): Getting wimpy. Where did the guitars go, and yes, where did the rock go?

Bands that got better in the 80s: good question.
