edhunter
Apparently Of the Battle is broken down into 4 subsections: The song is divided into 4 chapters: I) At the Tobes of Hades, II) Across the Styx, III) Of the Battle, IV) Epilogue. Chapter 3 (Of the Battle) is divided into 4 chapters in and of itself: i) Challenge and Defiance, ii) 7/4 War Furor, iii) Aftermath, iv) Hymn of Triumph. Total running time, according to the label, is only 8:37. Interesting...
Blue J
Interesting... ...and rather pretentious. But I guess we'll give them a pass on that. They were only 21/22 years old. I wasn't aware of that, about the "sub-chapters"- are there particular lyrics or musical passages that denote each one? Or are the sub-chapter titles just kind of shoved in there?
tot
good job edhunter! by the way, if you look closer, of the battle is not called of the battle. its called "the battle".
ytserush
Not an excuse, but my first copy of Fly By Night didn't have the original lyric sheet as it wasn't a first pressing. The first CDs didn't have it either. By the time I got the original pressings(vinyl and 97 remaster CD) with the black or blue inner lyric sheet I was past the point of committing the those original lyric sheets and liner notes to memory. I really love how Neil wrote them out like that. Wasn't Power Windows the last time that he wrote them out? Or was it later than that? I can still hear a bummed Geddy say they the typed lyrics felt "cold" to him but I can't recall exactly when that was. (I'm thinking Off The Record for Hold Your Fire but I'm not sure.) I haven't listened to the studio version in years, but if memory serves, The Battle breaks down a) would be when they're just jamming out b) is when they're doing the unison-octave thing that gets shorter and shorter c) would be the quiet part up to the snare roll and d) would be the bluesy solo leading to Geddy singing again. But who knows? I just learned about this the other day... Edited September 21, 2016 by edhunter
