goose
Btw for the record my copy & paste skills blow lol. Also All In The Family as a breakthrough and iconic show pretty much speaks for itself. Sorry for breaking the rules so quickly... The first few years of All in the Family are better than any other sitcom ever. The problem is I don't think it sustained in the later yearsAgree 1000%. As with most everything in life it went on way too long(notable exceptions Barry Sanders & Jim Brown to name a couple). Most people and entities never know when enough is enough...The only sitcom that sustained all the way through its long run is Cheers. If someone doesn't list it soon, I probably will.I re-watched the series last year with my son, who was really into it. The show did drag for almost an entire season when Diane and Sam's relationship dominated the plot. That got really old and predictable. Rebecca joining really lifted the show after that.

It featured a young John Cleese and Michael Palin, which are names you might recognize.

(except for the finale of course)I thought the finale was the best thing they did the last three years of the show. Seinfeld lost more of its humor toward the end of its run than MASH did, and that's saying a lot.

There are those who are critical of shows like this and to be sure it wasn't indicative of universal experiences (there were some pretty awful things going on at the time, to be sure, for certain Americans, but the show didn't deal with those experiences, and not everything should have to). I believe the lessons and morality of the show ARE universal and the characters were well developed, consistent, and even the ones shown negatively had a basic humanity to them. YMMV.

I've heard that the show wasn't as funny in later seasons, which might be the case, but looking through the synopses for the final season tells me there still were some great eps in there and that the show was still as funny overall as anything else. MASH did get more serious by the end of it's run (Honeycutt, Winchester and Potter weren't as wacky as who they replaced), but it was still good. Rushian King
22-- SCTV (1976-1981). What a cast: Joe Flaherty, Eugene Levy, Andrea Martin, Dave Thomas, John Candy, Catherine O'Hara, Harold Ramis, Rick Moranis, Robin Duke and.... wtf, Tony Rosato? The cast and their show are better than SNL although to be fair SCTV is only 30 minutes while SNL is stretched out over 90. Never seen (I think) SCTV Network 90, a 2 season, 90 minute version aired from 1981-1983.

This was a great show, and should have been on before SNL, since there were no DVRs so you had to stay up till 12:30 to watch it, if you were lucky enough to be in a market that showed it. I think my favorite episode is when the Soviet satellite took over the broadcast and they parodied the type of drivel that would have been shown on Soviet TV.
