Segue Myles
Straight relationships get stereotyped all the time as well. I've lost count of the number of times when every time I put a film on I have to turn it off coz the pretty guy is a womaniser, and the female character is solely portrayed as whiny, and needy, and jealous, and paranoid and confused as to why her handsome lover keeps straying from her side. But somehow she is meant to be the heart and the heroine of the story. Nearly every "romantic comedy" portrays men purposely in a, let's be honest, sexist light, seemingly unaware that the central female lead is an insufferable cow. It's OK for women to complain about men and run them into the ground, but reverse the roles and you have a misogynistic jerk. Drives me mad. Segue Myles
The Willy Wonka movie with Johnny Depp. Kind of me too, there. But the original. You didn't like the original? It was a bit slow until they get to the chocolate factory. As a kid, the book was a real pleasure of mine. The original movie was horrid. Then Depp's movie came out, and it was a revelation! Like Alice In Wonderland, I doubt a perfect adaptation of this story will ever come to fruition, but I do love the latest one. I grew up with the original, and preferred the book. I still prefer the book, but Depp's movie was more in touch with the crazy, and the children were, sad to say haha, more vividly believable. It lacked the saccharine cutesiness of the seventies version (that Dahl hated), AND YES I KNOW WE SEE A CHICKEN GET BEHEADED! But Depp's was more in touch with the Dahl sense of wonder and crazy (even if I do find the Time Burton tropes a little fatiguing).

CMWriter
I have mixed feelings about the upcoming Deadpool film. On one hand, Colossus is making an appearance. Nobody can keep me from my dear Piotr. On the other hand, the whole movie is about... Deadpool. He really is the epitome of 90's marvel, and I wasn't a huge fan of the whole era from about 90-07 or so, with exceptions. Copper age was kind of eehhh to me. But, who knows; this may well be Fox's turn of the tide when it comes to their Marvel films. More on the topic, I'm a sucker for B movies. It's when high budget films try too hard that I can't get through it. Exception is Stranger by the Lake because I can only take so much of... Some of those scenes... It was gorgeous and even well written but after 30 minutes I decided to spare myself.

The X-Men flicks + the two Wolverine solo movies haven't been as good as I hoped...I liked two, thought two were ok, and thought three were bad. The thing about Colossus is that he works better [banter & battling side by side] with Wolverine & Nightcrawler. And those two guys won't be in that Deadpool movie. As far as I know, it'll be Colossus + some New Mutants making an appearance.
Segue Myles
One film I actually DID finish after several attempts was The Aviator. Even when I did finally finish it, I was left thinking "what was the point of that?". It was poorly directed, if you ask me. Too much focus on the style, too little on the bones of the story. Care Blanchett deserved that Oscar though.

It looks beautiful, and the performances are great. But it never comes together to make for a great piece of entertainment.

Feel the same about Scorsese's flicks. When it's good, it's usually really good. When it's bad, I usually fall asleep.

But there are quite a few others I liked too: Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Cape Fear, Casino, and The Departed. Then there are the ones that I thought moved a bit slowly (in parts or all the way through): Last Temptation, Bringing Out the Dead, Gangs of New York, Hugo, and Wolf of Wall Street. Didn't dislike any of those really but it would've been ok not to see them.
pjbear05
Dallas buyers club, inception, that RIP movie with Ryan Reynolds Dallas Buyers Club was fantastic! Inception I saw twice, it was OK (Shutter Island was the best Leo film that year...I think it was that year anyway). Ryan Reynolds? Has he ever been a lead in a good film? Actually, has he ever been in a good film?I'm with you Segue on Dallas Buyers Club. Thought it was quite good with two quality performances in Matt M & especially Leto. Inception felt slow to me so I fell asleep in the cinema. Yeah, I'm not sure either if I've ever seen Reynolds in a good movie at all.Loved Dallas Buyers Club! The movie I can think of where I liked both film and Ryan Reynolds is a silly comedy called "Dick." Reynolds has a bit part as a kind of stupid, good looking guy so it works for him. The movie is a Watergate parody that stars Kirsten Dunst and Michelle Williams and they are fun to watch. It's a little silly but funny if you know anything about Watergate. I was talking about this not too long ago in another thread so I apologize for repeating but my movie I always turn off is 2001: A Space Odyssey. My dad took me at a young age when I knew nothing about the plot or symbolism and it was like watching paint dry. I understand it now but still don't like it! Also Twister. Someone had told me it was an actual good movie. I wanted to walk out badly but my kids wanted to stay, ick. (We have cow!)"Dick" was freaking hilarious! Especially the " hello Dolly's" with the "walnuts".

And all the hype for Hugo, sorry but if one kids film from 2011 deserved that much hype, Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows was a better bet. Potter got snubbed at the Oscars for...a pretty beautiful piece of fluff.

Digital Dad
The Matrix. Everyone kept saying it was so great and they saw it in theaters 3 or 4 times and this and that. Rented it and thought it sucked. Big time. Not like this is a disappointment suck but like how could they have even made this drivel in the first place. Carrie Ann Moss otoh.... I would've said Matrix also BUT I fell asleep trying to watch that on 3 separate viewings. I didn't think falling asleep counted here.
