Mick Have you tried the vinyl? To my ears on my sound system it is much improved on the vinyl pressing. I can hear the instrument separation. now the sound stage is admittedly not as large as on the earlier albums but is at least there. Well, based on nearly forty years of input, I'll recall the main reasons, chronologically (not my opinions, but those I've heard): 1. NERDY. They are a sci-fi/fantasy nerd band. Proper adolescents should like the usual sex, drugs and rock n roll stuff. AC/DC, Molly Hatchet, Van Halen, Black Sabbath... all cool, but not Rush (not in public).2. KEYBOARDS ARE AWFUL. They have dweeb-ish keyboards. Not cool keyboards like The Doors, but "Oh I just bought a keyboard at Target" keyboards (ref Tom Sawyer).3. PEART IS AWFUL. Neil Peart is a bombastic, anal-retentive, overly-analytical robot whose playing has no soul. Way too busy (like "too many notes"). Keith Moon and Bonzo's playing stood out, but it was welcome. Peart's playing is an unwelcome, constant intrusion.4. UNCOOL. Desperately uncool. Look at the jacket photos from 2112 and then from the PoW/HYF era. Compare to "cool" bands. How can anyone like a band that looks so uncool?5. SOULLESS. The music has no soul, no groove. It's never about pain or loss or real emotion. This was heard all the time before Vapor Trails, but I imagine those same people wouldn't be impressed by Neil's public exorcism on that album.6. UNHIP. There is no sardony, irony, black humor (except for Neil's subtle dry wit, but Rush's critics don't know them that well). Rush does not snear, mope, shout, puke, pose, or act diffident enough to impress the musical literati. They are way too earnest and well-adjusted for most the unhappy self-loathing types that equate personal identity with personal musical taste. They hold no appeal from the Emo-loving metrosexuals or the Clash-loving arbiters of artistic legitimacy. I could go on but these are the high points I've encountered. Re Geddy's voice, I've never met anyone who objected to his voice that I think would have otherwise taken them seriously, so I don't count that one.
