Pete Townshend

I've been a HUGE PT fan since I saw The Who's appearance on The Smothers Brothers Show, bought the Tommy LP, bought the Live at Leeds LP and sat front row at the Woodstock movie in LBI NJ the first week it's release, where Peter became my Rock God back in 1970. Pete is a musical genius and :finbar: deserves his own thread.

I would say that he used to be a musical genius but he really hasn't done a whole lot in the last 20 or 30 years. I was one of the biggest Who fans out there back in the day and I think Tommy, Quadrophenia and Who's Next were the highlight of their studio albums.

He didn't drive himself mad in the last three decades, but with Tommy, Who's Next and Quadrophenia he conquered his place in Olympus. What a composer!

Wolfgang Amadeus WHO?.....

Pete has said something to the effect that he would love to write another Quadrophenia, but how do you top it?

Every band has their apex. Where do you go from there? Sting said that at the end of the Synchronicity tour when the Police were doing the Shea Stadium show, he looked out at 70,000 fans and then knew there was only one way for the Police to go from there - on the way down, so they bailed out on top.

In my opinion, it's a shame that musicians like Pete get overshadowed by upstarts in the business. I say this because it is musicians like Pete who paved the way for them. Pete and others deserve more respect and recognition than they get nowadays.

Once again, in my opinion. :)

Who Are You, Permanent Waves, and Empty Glass ushered me from junior high into high school. The latter is the greatest album that belongs on all of those lists it's probably not on.

The Who at Tanglewood, MA. 1970.

Pete is in full command of the guitar, fully animated and the entire band is giving 100%. If you haven't seen it, look no further.

Wow, what a great piece of history this concert is. Thanks so much for posting. This is the Who during the years they were at their peak for me.... I love Pete in his white jumpsuit days.... Often Pete would face Keith and they would feed off each other.. Magical.

Me too. The white jumpsuit and Doc Martens... PRICELESS

I had to buy a pair of Doc Martens after I saw Pete at Woodstock. Year's before that...I also bought Beatle Boots and had them outfitted with metal plates... in 5th grade 1965. The shop teacher yanked those metal plates ( cleats ) right off my boots day one.

When it came to rock music, I was such an impressionable kid. :codger:

Are you kidding me?

I'm a Pete Townshend ADDICT!!!!

I love The Who dearly but nothing touches Pete's solo material.

The Perfect Trilogy:

"Empty Glass"

"All The Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes"

"White City"

I love "Iron Man" and "Psychoderelic" as well.

If Pete Townshend is God then Simon Phillips is Jesus Christ!!!

The boots with the high water pants jumpsuit, and Keith with a jumpsuit too. I had a friend in high school that would wear jumpsuits like he wore to school, her nickname was Moonie. :)

As far as his solo material goes the only thing I've heard is his "iron man" album. It has nothing to do with the movie. ;) It's an ok album but nothing too special imo.

All I can tell you is that, yes the The Who albums are what we might call indispensable. Still, with Empty Glass as a debut solo, Pete set himself atop a form of art...

vvv ...and what RH666 says about Simon Phillips applies, as well.

Saw the band around 79 at Wembley Stadium in London.

I believe there is footage of this concert on YOUTUBE.

Great energy driven concert. Kenny Jones did a sterling job on drums, but of course he had none of the manic

dramatics Keith Moon brought to the band.

Support acts? Stranglers, Nils Lofgren and Bon Scott era AC/DC.

Only bummer was a tube strike that left thousand stranded. I had to call my Aunt who lived in London to come pick me up.

Instead she sent a taxi

Fortunately he would only take a passenger with the right name which was Mactaggert, so I got the cab.

I felt like a rock star myself being driven through the thousands of fans roaming the streets. :Alex:

AHH, the good old days.

 only I am disappointed that he sold a lot of his catalog, and songs I have previously loved I now hear in commercials. :sigh:
