madra sneachta
Maybe it's because a teenager living on the South East coast of Ireland doesn't have much opportunity to go to big-name gigs, but I always loved live albums. As time passed, I moved to London for a while before settling here in the North West, and while I've now been to many gigs over the years, my fascination with live albums continues. Favourites include - Manu Chao - Radio Bemba Sound System I started getting into him a few years ago after he was featured in Uncut magazine. The music is an eclectic blend of reggae, salsa, jazz and punk, and the gig just sounds like a celebration. A year after getting this album, I got to see Manu in Dublin, and it was an incredible gig. By the time it finished, I was disappointed that he hadn't done either King Kong 5 or Mala Vida, but also slightly relieved because I was just absolutely knackered. Then the lights went down, the band came back out, and I found another gear somwehow. Thin Lizzy - Live And Dangerous For Irish rock fans, this album is a benchmark. The versions on this are so much better than the studio ones, particularly with tracks like Jailbreak and The Boys Are Back In Town. The version of Emerald complete with the "Is there anyone here with a little Irish in them?. Are there any of the girls who'd like a little more Irish in them?" is possibly my favourite live recording ever. Hamill On Trial - Ed's Not Dead, Hamill Comes Alive He put this together while recovering from a near fatal road accident which left him unable to walk or perform for a year because of a back injury. Culled together from live recordings while supporting Ani De Franco, it captures the essence of Hamill, the best solo performer I've ever seen live. Marillion - Real To Reel I've said before, I'm one of those Fish era fans who's interest waned when the big man left the band. I've also got The Thieving Magpie, which is a more comprehensive album and includes the whole of Misplaced Childhood, but Real To Reel is my favourite of the two. The photo montage on the inner sleeve includes a photo of the sign outside RCMH when Marillion supported Rush in the early '80s. If there was one gig I wish I'd been at, that's it. They Might Be Giants - Severe Tire Damage Strictly speaking, I'm not sure if this is a "live" album, as it has some studio stuff on it as well. However, cracking live versions of Why Does The Sun Shine?, Istanbul....Not Constantinople and They Got Lost swing this one for me. Violent Femmes - Viva Wisconsin A great album with all my Femmes Favourites included (including a sublime Add It Up), but I have one reservation. The screaming "woo hoos", mostly it appears female, during Country Death Song disturb me for some reason. Cheering during an account of a man throwing his daughter down a well because of a warped belief that he's protecting her from the evils of the world just doesn't seem right. Apart from that, this is a fine album. Horslips - The Belfast Gigs Recorded live on their farewell tour in 1980, it's the sound of a band who were heroes in Ireland for 10 years going out on a big blast. It's also special to the extent that my first ever proper gig was on that tour when they played Waterford. They reformed for one gig and album last year, and I was fortunate enough to be there and meet them all afterwards. AC/DC - If You Want Blood, You've Got It Durgh durgh dur dur dur dur dur - ANGUS!!. 'nuff said!!. No doubt there are some howling omissions from the list. Feel free to put me right!!
Riv
I agree on the Lizzy album. "Live and Dangerous" is great - I have it on vinyl. I can't think of a lot off-hand. Led Zeppelin "How The West Was Won" comes to mind.

PuppetKing2112
In my book, there's one live album that stands above all others, Rush included: Nine Inch Nails - And All That Could Have Been. Other than that, here are a few of my favorites: *The Who - Live at the Isle of Wight Festival 1970 (an improbement over Leeds, IMO...they do a few Lifehouse/Who's Next songs like "I Don't Know Myself," "Water," and "Naked Eye," plus a full Tommy! Can't go wrong.) *Yes - Yessongs *Yes - Yesshows *Pink Floyd - Ummagumma (Live Disc) - 10 minute Astronomy Domine! *The Police - Live! (Disc 1 MUCH more so than Disc 2) *Rage Against the Machine - Live at the Grand Olympic Auditorium
SheriffJohnBrown
The most memorable live recording I have ever heard is The Allman Brothers Band At Fillmore East. Other awesome concert albums: Peter Gabriel - Plays Live The Who - Live At Leeds Yes - Yessongs Robin Trower - Live Grand Funk - Caught in the Act Genesis - Live Miles Davis - At Plugged Nickel V.S.O.P. - The Quintet Jethro Tull - Bursting Out

Can't go wrong.) I dislike this one (ESPECIALLY the DVD) because the band plays so horribly. They're off rhythm, sloppy, and constantly off pitch. But you're right in that because it has a great setlist it's more than worth getting. IMO the performance at Leeds was much better, and if you get the expanded version it has the full Tommy too. Drumnut
One of my old favs was Ozzy's "Speak of The Devil" with Tommy Aldridge on drums. I met Tommy at a drum clinic in a Bar called Gilly's in Dayton, OH. Bought him a beer after the clinic. Tommy does more with two feet than many drummers do with two hands.
