wow if your a theater lover. that's the equivalent of finding a rare bootleg of your fav rock band.

as unpopular as this is here. i've been to lots of concerts of bands and artists. none of that will ever equal a night of live theater in my eyes. rock doesn't even touch it's heels.

Mick

It was growing up under my sister's influence. She's the one that brought home these albums when I was very little. I grew up listening to Broadway play soundtracks.

But then the Beatles came along and I left it behind.

Theater came from Guess who my grandma, lol

My cast recording collection is just as big if not bigger than my "regular music" collection, lol

i use to spend hours learning and singing along to them.

my live experience was guys and Dolls.

Mary Martin was the best Peter Pan.

Your grandmother must have been very special. Can I ask how old she was when she died? Was it your mother or father's mother?

She saw all the Broadway greats then in their heyday.

If you only knew how I felt when I hear of anyone like your grandma passing away. We don't breed people like that anymore.

It's our loss when they leave us. :rose:

thank you and i agree.

it was my pleasure to be her grandson.

I remember i played Rush for her she couldn't stand ged's voice but she loved the playing.

I made her a Rush mix. she said she LOVED Xanadu. lol.

She said she was blown back by just the level of musicianship.

Segue,

For no totally particular reason today, I decided to listen to TOP Blurryface for the first time just after listening through American Idiot.

I think I've mentioned somewhere before how they just don't click with me or something...this has changed. Somewhere in the first few songs I realized this was not what I expected it to be: corny left turns hastily inserted into vaguely alternative pop top 40 fodder with "relatable" lyrics.

Instead it was: the sounds and styles of the top 40, turned inside out and scrambled and jumbled together into genius gems of spontaneous, hook-ridden, off-kilter pop nuggets...all to better represent the actual experience of the band and their relationships with themselves and the importance of music in their lives, written in such a way that others can find it "relatable"

If that sounds like gibberish, it's cuz I have a hard time putting the genius here into words. I'm not calling them The Beatles, but I am saying this album is a type of Sgt. Pepper's, for impact, ingenuity, and coercion of the generally bland and cliche into the thrilling and original. Not to mention, they seem to have successfully reconciled The Beatles with Eminem via the lens of 10's top 40, which I hadn't imagined was actually possible. And all the while they've succeeded as artists, as a business, and as the source of a devoted fan base, while ironically being unable to reconcile their own demons.

I said genius. I meant it. This band just proved to me that one CAN be smarter than pop music, and pop culture by extension, if one is brave enough to attempt an understanding of it. And they proved that all you actually need to succeed in today's pop landscape is a good chorus/hook; the rest can be whatever the heck pleases you.

Twenty One Pilots are pop geniuses.

they are not my fav modern band. but......they can craft a pop tune no doubt.

i like other pop bands a lot more.......but i would never deny the talant there.
