Lorraine
I can hear though why younger fans would love the album. I don't know where I fit- I'm not really among the "old-timers", but I don't consider myself a young Rush fan, either. I just wanted to address this because I said above that I do love the album. I think the songwriting and the musicianship, the interplay, are absolutely first-rate. Do I love this album in the same way that I love A Farewell to Kings, or Hemispheres, or even Permanent Waves? No. But that's only because of the sea change that had taken place in their musical direction between the end of the seventies and the middle of the eighties. Power Windows is, as objectively as I can state it, a great album. But that's also entirely subjective at the same time. I don't know why I feel such a need to clarify, or justify. But there it is. By younger, I had in mind those in their twenties who seem to like the lighter, bouncier type music.
Bigbobby10
Middle town Dreams is a beautiful song, I could never vote for that
Narps
If you want to throw in a lengthy discussion regarding the merits of S & A that would be the cherry on top... :)How can you discuss something that doesn't exist? :syrinx: As you probably are aware, part of the intent of that sentence was for you and you didn't disappoint... :laughing guy: Edited April 3, 2015 by Narpsberg
Lorraine
To me, it's not a bad album. it's just so un-Rush-y it makes Presto sound good. Anyway, voted for Middletown Dreams. By the way Narps, now that you are here, when is the surgery so Mick and I can prepare the entertainment to facilitate your recovery process?Next Friday. I will probably be in la la land most of that day I would imagine. Thanks for asking... :)Probably Saturday I will need a robust discussion of the TMT and CA tour DVD and the Clockwork Angels album. If you want to throw in a lengthy discussion regarding the merits of S & A that would be the cherry on top... :) I've got it all planned. Was going to make it a big Rush miscellaneous thread where everyone can argue and rip each other to shreds discuss everything and anything to do with Rush. I was going to ask Mick to get the ball rolling with a few criticisms remarks. He's good at fanning the flames of Rush fans. Right, Mick?
toymaker
"Fellas, you're going to be so impressed with this new synth technology. Listen: when I push this key, it makes a sound like fairy dust falling from a unicorn's ass." "Awesome! Add that in to the start of Big Money!" "And when I push this key, it makes a sound like two robots head-butting each other." "Love it! Can you put that in at the start of Big Money?" "Oh, and my favorite. Listen to what happens when I push this key: I can't even describe this one: Doo-doo-dit-dee-dee." "Oh my God! We have to have that somewhere at the start of Big Money!" "Guys? I had this idea for a little guitar lick--" "Not now, Alex! . . . Sorry about that. You were just about to show me what this key does . . ."

Lorraine
I think I'll ask LABT to get busy penning a dissertation for next Saturday on how he used to be a Presto hater and still is and now he's not.

Oh, I wasn't being critical...Mick and I were just having a bit of fun quoting lyrics from a song on the album that will surely be picked apart in round eleven. :)
Segue Myles
Power Windows would be another 10, if it were not for The Big Money. Never truly understood why they would open an album with such a clunky tune. Rest of the album, the best is better than anything on GUP...but that opener...good but not really that good.
toymaker
I hate that Emotion Detector has those awful drums throughout the verses - but the song does redeem itself a bit with some very great playing during the guitar solo - actually more like a bass and guitar solo at the same time.
Lorraine
I like Emotion Detector a lot for some reason. But it's not Rush. Hard to believe it's the same band that did Xanadu. Or Hemispheres. Edited April 3, 2015 by Lorraine

You and Mick and I all agree on the same Achilles heel, then! And I am probably more vehemently opposed to it than either of you. I almost always skip it.
