Is that last one Chris Duarte?

Yes.

He is a stellar guitarist. I have TSSM and Blue Velocity. Love both of those. I also have the live album, but I was pretty disappointed with it. He's still incredible, though.

I saw him in Austin back before he decided to fill the void left by SRV (and to be honest, I haven't listened to any of his more recent stuff, so that may not even be his thing any more). He was very much into jazz at the time. Really cool stuff. I remember chatting with him after he'd done his sound check and he noodled on the guitar the whole time we were talking.

On drums:

Neil, of course

Steve Gorman (Black Crowes)

Matt Abts (Gov't Mule)

Clyde Stubblefield (James Brown's band, around 1967-'68)

And I know there are a ton of other drummers I'm not thinking of right now.

The first person who made me want to play guitar was Ray LaMontagne- and I can play some of his songs.

John Mayer

Jim Croce

Tim Hardin

The guys who I listen to and my jaw just hits the floor, wishing I could do anything close to what they do are:

Alex Lifeson, of course

Derek Trucks

Rich Robinson and Marc Ford, both

Steve Howe, definitely

Stevie Ray Vaughan

Seems like we should start a band together.

As I said in the influence thread the guys I play with make me want to play. I don't really look to famous players anymore for inspiration. I may hear a song that might spark an idea but generally it's the guys that I interact with directly that give me the impetus to do something. I am finding for me it's about the moment and being in it.

Good points.. Was thinking similar thoughts, but did not put in my earlier response. Many times, the big inspiration is seeing a local band that no-one has ever heard of but being in the moment inspires me to want to RUSH home and play. Whether it is hearing a cool riff I want to see if I can imitate, thinking, "I could play that better (usually drunk me thinking that, sober me would think better)", or just being around a fun-time scene where the music enhances the vibe.

My point is more from a place of not really listening to music for pleasure as much as I used to. When I do listen it's in the car. Must be an age factor too. I just don't seek out music the way I did when I was younger and most of the shows I go to now are usually small jazz shows by known musicians with the rare big rock show thrown in. I've found some cool younger bands through the Rock Band games, but that's going by the way side now.

I still seek out information on recording and production techniques from pros who do it regularly but not as much from the music standpoint.

I started playing bass because of Geddy. Then Steve Harris. Then Jaco. Then Jimmy Garrison then Charlie Haden and Regfie Workman and then Charles Mingus.

After that it was all over. I got to a point where I was writing more that playing music but them real life set in.
