I've only seen Shining and Full Metal Jacket.

Drop everything now and borrow, beg or steal 2001 ASO, essential Kubrick!

Just watch it on a fairly big screen. That is essential.

Anyways my point basically was it's on the "movie to see before you die" list, that's all.

Just found this thread. Except for Killer's Kiss and The Killing, I've seen everything on there. The six that I own I've seen a million times over. Kubrick is by far my favorite director of all time. It's hard to pick the best one but I went with Clockwork, a sci-fi/horror/social commentary/political drama? What the hell is it? It's all of it. Edited by JohnnyBlaze

i've rewatched eyes wide shut recently. I still wasn't thrilled with it.I keep hoping something will click and i will suddenly see the brilliance that i hope is there.

The brilliance is in the first 20 seconds--Kidman's bare ass as she gets ready for Ziegler's party. :hail:

I just saw it again last Monday. It's the weakest of all of Kubrick's films but I still enjoy it.

Side note: In the middle of watching the other night, my wife walks in, sees one of the Kidman & Naval officer scenes, and asks, "This is a porno with Nicole Kidman?!!" I answered, "I wish." She laughed. I laughed. She playfully slapped my arm. I paused on a nude Kidman and zoomed. She laughed again. :blaze:

Just saw this thread now . . . Kubrick is one of the few directors that I feel can be mentioned along with Hitchcock and Bergman, although I wish he'd have been a bit more prolific ..

.. and apparently, a real pain in the ass to work with . .

I have not seen four on that list - the first three and Eyes Wide Shut ..

2001 is amazing, and really, most all these films could be considered, but I love The Shining so much .. more than the other because it is just so over the top and unique

I've seen it close to 100 times

I could've picked Strangelove, Full Metal Jacket, or 2001 but I settled on Clockwork. Can't think of another director who has so many movies I love.

Spartacus for me.

I find The Shining atrocious. Bad acting and nothing remotely scary.

I do like a few of the effects though. But yeah...never saw the appeal.

Paths of glory is one of my all time faves. I'm assuming a lot haven't seen it. It comes on Tcm from time to time.

It's probably his best movie.

I wouldn't say that but it's a great great movie.

That German singer near the end of the film was Kubrick's wife. They got married soon after that movie finished filming. They remained married up to his death; 41 years of marriage

I think it's his most emotional movie. A certain coldness permeated his films after Paths of Glory.

My ranking of Kubrick movies:

Dr. Strangelove

Paths of Glory

A Clockwork Orange

2001

Full Metal Jacket

Barry Lyndon

The Killing

The Shining

Eyes Wide Shut

Lolita

Spartacus

Killers Kiss

Fear and Desire

Fear and Desire

Hmm, that's a legit point but the coldness is one of the things that I think is interesting.

Thinking and rethinking about all of his that I've seen, I'd go this way:

A Clockwork Orange

Dr. Strangelove

Full Metal Jacket

2001

Paths of Glory

The Shining

Barry Lyndon

Eyes Wide Shut

Lolita

Spartacus

Fear and Desire

My top 5 are really apart from the others with the top 4 being a real tight race. Earlier I had said Eyes Wide Shut was his weakest but after a little consideration, I found it isn't at all. I think even Fear and Desire at the very bottom is quite good though.

Me either. Some classic scenes, but as an entire film, meh.

I can see how The Shining would not be a favorite for everyone .. It's over the top, and the pacing is definitely different than a lot of films ..

Camp is not the right word ..... For me, it is iconic and epic, and even though it borders on ludicrous at times, the subtly is incredible ..

Camera work, score, locations, feelings of isolation and things slipping out of control - I love it . . .

It is definitely a great film that does not fit with other great films

The look of the film, some of the visual imagery, and those flipping vomit inducing carpets are all noteworthy. But as a movie experience and as a piece of storytelling, I find it to be shockingly poor.

Especially considering how great the novel is. Don't get me wrong I don't hate the film because it doesn't live up to the book, as I saw the film first.

Segue, I agree with you as far as the storytelling - there is really nothing there when compared to other great films .

But I like that - the movie is paced so strange, and even the cadence of the lines that are delivered - the entire thing is hyponotic ..

From the opening shots of the water and car traveling on the road, and yes, the carpeting - it is so nightmarish ..

The only other film I can think of with a similar vibe ( for me ) is Dario Argento's Suspiria - where the actors lines are delivered according to the beating of a heart, instead of with any feeling or reason ..

Suspiria is a masterpiece.

I'm afraid I don't see the connection myself. The Shining fails on every level for me. It doesn't hold my interest, it doesn't get under my skin, it doesn't once give me chills...I saw this film first when I was eleven. I stayed up late...I was looking forward to being thrilled...I was dead bored.

Seen it twice since and it's one of the most monotonous movie experiences of my life. Don't get me wrong, I think horror is subjective. What fails for me is a success for someone else. I mean I still get tense watching Jaws, but I know many don't see anything scary about it at all...

But to place The Shining alongside the works of Dario Argento? Honestly I see that as blasphemy...but I am speaking from my experience with this movie.

For those thrilled by it, it must speak to something within that I don't have.

Also that woman who plays his wife is so irritating and she is such a bad actress it takes me out of the film entirely...honestly one of the worst performance's I've ever seen.
