Just when I thought things were looking up...

I got a call from the doctor we've been seeing. She was giving me some test results (nothing earthshattering yet) and when I said, "Okay, then, we're ready to move on to the DMSA challenge," she hesitated, and said that since she'd moved to our area, her new "employer" (other doctors in her practice, some sort of supervisor, I don't know) has informed her that she is not to pursue these "alternative" treatments. She gave me the name of a doctor in TENNESSEE, which doesn't help me a whole hell of a lot.

I'll figure this out, but right now I am hurt and angry and would like to MURDER the people who allowed my child to be injected with mercury.

Medical Doctors cannot be open to anything insurance companies and lawyers won't let them be open to. A sorry, sad state of affairs we have here. sad.gif

yes.gif My son has allergy-induced asthma. There is a new drug on the market that would be an alternative to his twice a day, 10- to 15-minute sessions breathing through a nebulizer. But, will his doctor prescribe it for him? no.gif No doctor will yet because it is "too new." confused13.gif WTF?

Of course her superiors don't want her to continue those treatments. There's not as much money to be made from "alternative" treatments.

Doctors make a lot of money from writing precriptions. The pharmaceutical companies kick back money to these doctors for pushing their drugs. They send them on vacations. Most of these prescribed drugs aren't designed to cure you, they're designed to help you live with your ailment. You can't blame these doctors for not persuing some of these alternative treatments...they might actually CURE YOU. Then where would they be without all that repeat business? sarcasm.gif

I was "taking the night off" tonight, catching up on some reading, but I found this and had to post it. I've bolded in red some things that I found worth highlighting, but the whole article is well written.

Autism, mercury, and politics

By Robert Kennedy Jr. | July 1, 2005

MOUNTING EVIDENCE suggests that Thimerosal, a mercury-based preservative in children's vaccines, may be responsible for the exponential growth of autism, attention deficit disorder, speech delays, and other childhood neurological disorders now epidemic in the United States.

Prior to 1989, American infants generally received three vaccinations (polio, measles-mumps-rubella, and diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis). In the early 1990s, public health officials dramatically increased the number of Thimerosal-containing vaccinations without considering the cumulative impact of the mercury load on developing brains.

In a 1991 memo, Dr. Maurice Hilleman, one of the fathers of Merck's vaccination programs, warned his bosses that 6-month-old children administered the shots on schedule would suffer mercury exposures 87 times the government safety standards. He recommended that Thimerosal be discontinued and complained that the US Food and Drug Administration, which has a notoriously close relationship with the pharmaceutical industry, could not be counted on to take appropriate action as its European counterparts had. Merck ignored Hilleman's warning, and for eight years government officials added seven more shots for children containing Thimerosal.

Mercury is a known brain poison, and autism rates began rising dramatically in children who were administered the new vaccine regimens. A decade ago the American Academy of Pediatrics estimated the autism rate among American children to be 1 in 2,500. Today, the CDC places the rate at 1 in 166, or 1 in 80 boys. Additionally, one in six children is now diagnosed with a related neurological disorder.

In 2000, the CDC met with pharmaceutical companies and the FDA in secret to review its findings linking Thimerosal with the dramatic rise in neurological illnesses. According to transcripts, participants were alarmed about the undeniable links between the Thimerosal and widespread brain damage in children. Dr. Bill Weil told the group, ''You can play with [the results] all you want. They are statistically significant." Dr. Richard Johnston admitted he feared his grandchild getting a Thimerosal-containing vaccine. But the group was most concerned with keeping the findings secret. ''Consider this embargoed information," said Dr. Roger Bernier, a senior director at the National Immunization Program, at the meeting's close. The CDC now says it has ''lost" the data that supported the crucial study and has persistently defied congressional requests and federal law requiring it to open up the federal Vaccine Safety Database to scientists and the public.

Numerous animal, DNA, epidemiological, and other studies point to Thimerosal as a culprit in America's epidemic of neurological disorders. Autistic children have been shown to have higher mercury loads than nonautistics, and there have been reports of significant improvements in some brain-injured children by removing mercury from their brains. Most of the symptoms of autism are similar to the symptoms of mercury poisoning. Scientists have been able to induce autism-like symptoms in mice by exposing them to Thimerosal. A recent study by an FDA scientist, Dr. Jill James, found that many autistic children are genetically deficient in their capacity to produce glutathione, an antioxidant generated in the brain that helps remove mercury from the body.

Government health agencies who green-lighted Thimerosal have turned a blind eye to the hundreds of studies linking Thimerosal to a wide range of neurological disorders and joined the pharmaceutical industry to gin up a series of flawed European studies to exonerate Thimerosal. Those studies examined children exposed to a tiny fraction of the Thimerosal given to American kids and took advantage of the autism spike that resulted from deceptive data-gathering in Scandinavia to argue that autism rates are unrelated to Thimerosal use.

Drug makers wary of liability reduced Thimerosal in most children's vaccines in recent years, but the preservative remains in flu shots, tetanus boosters, and over-the-counter drugs. Mercury-laced vaccine stocks were given to American children until the end of 2003. [stephen got the majority of his shots between his birth in Feb. 2000 and August 2003.]

Government officials who continue to champion Thimerosal should recognize that this is not just a theoretical exercise in bureaucratic face-saving. Their wrong-headed defense of Thimerosal safety in the face of overwhelming science is discouraging testing of promising treatments which may be effective. They are depriving vulnerable populations from being identified to avoid Thimerosal. They also cannot escape responsibility for their failure to warn international health agencies and governments who, based upon American assurances, are now injecting the developing world's children with this brain-killing chemical.

With evidence this compelling, the people responsible should be tried in a court of law on charges of child endangerment. The sentences can be carried out by the parents of the children they poisoned. mad.gif

i concur. it is freakin OUTRAGEOUS that making money was more important to some than the safety of America's children..and that, as you said, they can get away with it. i can't even begin to imagine what kind of douchebags are heading some of our biggest pharmaceutical companies. http://www.by-tor.com/temp_forums/images/smiles/013.gif

UPDATE: I got Stephen an appointment with a holistic M.D. here in our city. I was looking for a dr. for myself, started reading some of the information on his website, and thought...This stuff sounds like what I want for Stephen. So, I called, left a message, he called me back, and said he'd be glad to see Stephen and do the test that the OTHER doctor wouldn't do. Plus I can hopefully cancel the appt. I had made for Stephen to see a dr. in Tennessee, which would be about a 3 1/2 hour drive for us.

The downside? No insurance help on this...it's so "radical" they won't pay for this stuff. mad.gif But, we do what we have to do for our kids, don't we?

GG, I hope this new doctor can help your son. My thoughts and prayers will be with you.

As an aside, the fact that the large pharamcutical companies were in cahoots with the federal government to keep this major blunder hidden, is of no surprise to me. I have no doubt that there will be a major lawsuit stemming from this in the near future, and that some of these companies will become bankrupt as a result.

On a related note.. if these large drug companies think that the American public are going to allow them to get away with this, they have another thing coming. The below article is fresh off the wire from Texas. Merck just got hit with a $250,000,000.00 verdict for the bullshit they pulled with respect to Vioxx. And this isn't from a jury in Cook or Madison County Illinois.. it's from a small rural county in Texas that is extremely conservative in it's jury awards.

Jury Awards Widow $253.4M in Vioxx Trial

By KRISTEN HAYS and THERESA AGOVINO
AP Business Writer

ANGLETON, Texas

A Texas jury found pharmaceutical giant Merck & Co. liable for the death of a man who took the once-popular painkiller Vioxx.

Jurors awarded Robert Ernst's widow, Carol, $253.4 million in damages, which is a combination of his lost pay as a Wal-Mart produce manager, mental anguish, loss of companionship and punitive damages.

The case drew national attention from pharmaceutical companies, lawyers, consumers, stock analysts and arbitragers as a signal of what lies ahead for Merck, which has vowed to fight the more than 4,200 state and federal Vioxx-related lawsuits pending across the country. Merck said it plans to appeal.

A seven-man, five-woman jury from a semi-rural county south of Houston deliberated for 10 1/2 hours over two days before blaming the drug for killing Ernst in his sleep in 2001. Jurors rejected Merck's argument that Ernst died of clogged arteries rather than a Vioxx-induced heart attack that led to his fatal arrhythmia.

In Texas, punitive damages are capped at twice the amount of economic damages _ lost pay _ and up to $750,000 on top of non-economic damages, which are comprised of mental anguish and loss of companionship. Non-economic damages have no limit in Texas except in medical malpractice cases, which doesn't apply to the Ernst case.

Shares of Merck & Co. fell $1.01, or 3.3 percent, to $29.40 in afternoon trading on the New York Stock Exchange after the verdict.
