losingit2k
It shouldn't need to be said, but here's why this song doesn't work: In a dog's lifeA year is really more like sevenAnd all too soon a canineWill be chasing cars in doggie heaven It seems to meAs we make our own few circles 'round the sunWe get it backwardsAnd our seven years go by like one Dog years --- It's the season of the itchDog years --- With every scratch it reappears In the dog daysPeople look to SiriusDogs cry for the moonBut these connections are mysterious It seems to meWhile it's true that every dog will have his dayWhen all the bones are buriedThere is barely time to go outside and play Dog years --- It's the season of the itchDog years --- With every scratch it reappearsDog years --- For every sad son of a bitchDog years --- With his tail between his ears I'd rather be a tortoise from GalapagosOr a span of geological timeThan be living in these dog years In a dog's brainA constant buzz of low-level staticOne sniff at the hydrantAnd the answer is automatic It seems to meAs well make our own few circles 'round the blockWe've lost our sensesFor the higher-level static of talk I second that! Slack jaw gaze
Time and Motion is way worse, musically, than Dog Years. No idea about the lyrics. If the music is not good, I don't care what the lyrics are. Half the World isn't half bad. The geek in me likes the fact it may be the world record holding rock song for most fractions. Bytor-527
Not their best, absolutely. But I don't see anything wrong with this song. Okay, Neil wrote best songs. Every band has ups and downs. Rush doesn't have downs.

Mr. Not
I popped in Test For Echo today at random, and one track caught my ear as especially fun, lighthearted, catchy, and instrumentally worthwhile. That track is Dog Years. I've seen a lot of hate for it over the years on here. Why? There is absolutely nothing wrong with this track, other than that it doesn't take itself too seriously... which isn't really anything wrong with it. It's a great song! The chorus (vocals & guitar) sucks, the lyrics (for the most part) suck, but the rest is good. So it's a decent TFE song. "It seems to me..." ^ love that moment Edited July 18, 2014 by Mr. IsNot
Mr. Not
All due respect to Rush and their talents and influence on rock and roll, but slapping stale music onto a nonsensical paragraph about dogs licking their balls "tail between their ears..." and managing to make it sound pretentious at the same time is not the way to win (and keep) fans. And just because you use the word Galapagos in a song, doesn't make it any f***ing better. I hope one day, before Rush hangs it up, they'll realize that they're entitled to diversify. Break out of this "phoning it in" phase, and use the talent we know you all have to make something new and different and exciting. :eyeroll:

savagegrace26
I think it's musically very well done. The lyrics are just kind of there for me and don't bother me or detract from the music. I do love the "people look to Sirius" line although I'm not sure what it's supposed to mean on a literal level. That wordplay is cool.
savagegrace26
I would like to hear it live. The musicianship is good and it has a good pace for a live setting. Although I'm afraid of what the background video might be like....
savagegrace26
I think it's more interesting than Half the World and Carve Away the Stone. The Color of Right has really grown on me and might be one of my faves now. Really nice song. That Totem and the title track are my top 3.

rugen
Hate is a big word, it's still Geddy, Alex and Neil playing for 4 minutes, as long as i can hear their instruments and voice and that it's not muddy or cacaphonic

The line "seven years go by as one" has always resonated with me, especially as I get older. x1yyz
I don't have a problem with Dog Years, keeping in mind it is meant to be a fun, lighthearted song. I wouldn't play it on repeat or anything, but every once in awhile is fine.
