Had I been allowed to include solo artists (is Neil Young and Crazy Horse a band?) my list would be substantially different. And I wasn't sure what was meant by "non-pop." But I did my best!

Fixed! Nevermind about the "pop music" definition.

Neil Young (and Crazy Horse) would still be considered a solo artist's work for me, but if you want to include it...

Important to me? or important to the history of rock/metal? Infuential and pioneering? I don't know, I suppose these:

first 4 Zep albums

Beatles albums between '65-'68

First 3 Sabbath albums

Priest albums from '76-'79

Metallica's first 3 albums

Rush from '75 to '78

Van Halen 1

that should amount to about 20.

To me there's a big difference between what I consider the most important rock albums and what I consider are my favorite rock albums. Which are you looking for?

i assume when he said "important to me" = favorites, if not, i agree it's very different, because it apply that you take a objective point a view on this and don't take your personal tastes in consideration

Get ready for a spreadsheet list of top 20 by decade and/or top 20 by sub-sections of rock. ;)
