Scottjf8
It seems the opening bass riff of HF in the live show is just TOO perfect.. looked/sounded like he was playing along with the record... Thoughts? Here's a YouTube link to look at

CE24
At the Cleveland show, the bass opening started without him. He quickly made an 'oh shit!!!!' face, and started playing.
bscsmkr
I believe because it's double tracked bass on record so he might use the backing track, but also play along
Nate1647
What I've gathered from watching all the videos. To synch the song at the right tempo, as well as get the intro effects, the first time through the riff (the muffled sounding one) is a sample. Geddy comes in on the 2nd one and thats why you can actually hear it. He hasn't tried to hide this in any of the videos I've seen.
default236
I noticed this too, still cool to watch and hear!
Rushman14
the first riff is a sample. I dont think was supposed to be a secret.
Prime Mover and Shaker
He hammed it up a couple times when I saw him, mocking surprise that his bass seemed to be playing itself.

It's just for the opening riff so it's not a big deal.
GangsterOnBoats
Yes at Charlotte when the first bass line comes in, its a clear recording and Geddy lifted his arms to make it seem like he was playing magically without use of hands. After the first time around, he joined in with two bass lines playing simultaneously.
SUBDIVISIONS
Same in Las Vegas, fun to watch, listen carefully and thats exactly what happen on the record, a sample mix starts and on the third round he joins to it with the bass
Sticklight
It's very simple. Geddy triggers a sample of the intro riff and he joins to it on his bass, few seconds later. When he starts playing, it actually sounds like there are 2 bass player playing at the same time, because he's playing along to the sample. thirteen
He hammed it up a couple times when I saw him, mocking surprise that his bass seemed to be playing itself. He did this at the Anaheim show. I cracked up laughing.

Snaked
The opening riff is a sample and then Ged comes in.
ClassicB
What would Geddy Lee do without SAMPLES? He may have to actually PLAY the parts like he used to back in the day! Edited November 30, 2012 by ClassicB
Xanadu2112
Because he's Geddy Lee he can play that intro any way he wants;)...
USB Connector
Listen to the first repetition, it founds different than the second. I was under the impression that since it's a different effect he synced the first one so he could actually play the second without having ANOTHER pedal to worry about.
