Seriously, if you have a problem with this song because of it does not contain actual anagrams, then you must have a problem with a bunch of other songs, including:

Music can be and is largely figurative rather than literal, and this is not even taking into account that the "Anagram (for Mongo)" title is evidently a joke title.

The "(For Mongo)" part is a joke (a Blazing Saddles reference), but "Anagram" definitely isn't, and I can't fathom where you're getting the idea that it's somehow "figurative". "Natural Science" is figurative. "Anagram" could be figurative if it had lines like, "Each of us is an anagram for the other," or something like that, but it isn't. It's a collection of literal wordplay that at least resembles anagrams. That's the entire point of the song. And that's why people don't like it - it's obviously trying to be a set of witty anagrams, but it just isn't one.

The entire title is a "joke". Anagram (for Mongo) = Candygram (for Mongo). If that reference didn't exist whose to say if Neil would have just called it plain "Anagram"? Your insinuation that Neil doesn't know what an anagram is ridiculous. He probably realized it was just a song and didn't take it as seriously as you are. Making a song out out of actual "anagrams" would probably be very awkward to say the least.

His play on words and phrases is still inventive whether or not it fulfills your pedantry.

Anagram 062802puke_prv.gif Easily the worst song off Presto.

I don't know; "Hand Over Fist" gives it some tough competition there.

Superconductor is easily the weakest track. Hand Over Fist gets better and better over time - has a great groove to it. Anagram gets so much hatred simply because people don't understand it.

Holy Heck Dude!!!!!

Hand over Fist has less groove than bald tyre!

The only thing to understand from Anagram is that Neil Purt doesn't know what an Anagram is!

Neil Peart is one of the most well read, literate, intelligent people out there....do you REALLY think he just "screwed up" and thought all the lyrics in that song were anagrams? rofl3.gif

What does that even mean? Who's to say that he wouldn't have?

As far as I'm concerned, I think that it's pretty obvious that the reference occurred to him after he came up with the title, and he decided that it would be fun to add it. (Example: every Rush liner note joke ever.)

Your insinuation that I said anything like that is even more so.

I don't care one way or the other about the song. It was your post that I couldn't stand.

Not my pedantry, but whatever. I was explaining why other people hate the song.

it's absolutley WRONG to leave Dog Years off that list....wrong.

That one song has sparked more discussion than any other since 1989....it is not included?

Poll therefore is not valid.

because Hilter and Dog Years have so much in common after all?

Bringing up Hitler is a discussion wrecker.

I love Bravado and I voted for it, but I'm kind of surprised at how many votes it's gotten. RTB gets a lot of negative comments around here and Bravado isn't mentioned as often as, say, Dreamline.

Does it stand out from the rest of the album that much that it merits your respective votes for it, those of you who did vote for it?

I know, Godwin's Law and all that, but that was the best analogy that I could think of. I can't think of anybody from the past century who's had that kind of recognition, good or bad, and my entire point was that something isn't necessarily good because people talk about it.

I'd say yes...it's one of my very favorite Rush songs, so it stands out from everything they do.
