A perfect 'album' is just that: an album, not just a collection of songs. There are lots of albums out there chalk full of hits, but the best albums have continuity, each song complements the others, variety, a 'song cycle', you know a real 'beginning', a centerpiece song, a real denoument of an ending, and the other songs are a glue that adds texture and wholeness to the album.

Favorite albums by above definition:

Hemispheres

2112

Led Zeppelin IV

Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son

Reign In Blood

Fair Warning

Master Of Puppets

Paranoid

Who's Next

Quadrophenia

I think a lot of us are way too lenient on what is a "perfect" album. I love The Beatles more than any other band I listen to, by far, and I would only consider maybe 1 or 2 of their albums as "perfect". The same with Rush, only 1 or 2 albums. I love Bob Dylan and I listed Blonde on Blonde as a perfect album. I listened to it recently, it's not perfect. And I don't necessarily consider a "perfect" album a masterpiece. Boy, I'm ramblin' right now...

Personally, I think the honor of being a "perfect" album should have strict standards. "Great" albums, yeah, I can name hundreds. "Perfect" albums, well shouldn't that be a little harder?

everyone will have their own standards, and I listed mine in my first post. i have many, many albums on a "great albums" list that wouldn't qualify as perfect...
