Earthshine
ZZ Top began as a simple little blues band back in 1969. Beginning with the ZZ Top's First Album they made some great music. Finally having some commercial success with La Grange and Tush they were bigger than ever when they released Tejas. But after their World Wide Texas Tour in 1976, they took a 4 year layoff to return with the somewhat obscure Deguello. Then of course in 1983 came Eliminator and is was total commericialism at that point. Their songs and style changed. They even re-released the first 5 albums with a "new" drum sound and supposedly re-recorded parts of some of the tracks! They were a great band for so long. Saw them live 3 years ago but nothing like they were back in the glory days.
RUSHHEAD666
This is a great poll!!! Dude, I love ZZ TOP but man, "Eliminator" was formulated for MTV. A Kick Ass Texas Blues Band who turns into hi hat drum machine shit tit hit slit. WTF? Who told Frank Beard to play drums to a stupid Eighties drum machine? "Afterburner" gets worse! Frank started going all electronic. "Slip inside your sleeping bag" and then zip it up and snuff it! "Rough Boy" is awful too. I would rather listen to Pete Townshend's "Rough Boys" on "Empty Glass," and we all know what that song is about. I have still bought every ZZ TOP album over the years hoping that they would someday return to that "Tush" sound, but it hasn't happened. FAIL! Why does this great band from Texas have to try and be so damn experimentally retarded? LOL! Stick to the hard rocking blues and all will be well. "Recycler" didn't blow me away either. More MTV Machine Mush. I know for a fact that my buddy Treeduck loves all the modern ZZ TOP. I wish I could get it, but I don't. ZZ TOP needs to keep wearing their "Cheap Sunglasses" while they shake their asses to "Tube Snake Boogie." No disrespect to Billy Gibbons. One of the baddest muthafukkin' guitar players in the world. MMCXII
ZZ top is probably the only band that could sell out and still look cool!
g under p
I don't know or I should I don't thinkthey sod out especially when they did something like this....from Wiki... QUOTE In 1984, the Gillette Company reportedly offered Gibbons and Hill $1 million each to shave their beards for a television commercial. They allegedly declined, saying "We're too ugly without 'em."[2] Peace
rushgoober
I only know their early hits. I'm not familiar with their early albums, but what I've heard is decent stuff, if a bit too middle of the road for my tastes. My wife loves them. If you get a chance, check out the 1968 album Flash by The Moving Sidewalks, which features Billy Gibbons on guitar and vocals. Now THAT is a great psychedelic bluesy album. liquidcrystalcompass
I don't think it was a sell out. They were following the times just like our beloved Rush did. Let's face Rush fans. Rush catered to popularity for a brief stint. Eliminator was so-so and Afterburner pretty much sucked.
ozzy85
I had never heard of ZZ Top until '83's Eliminator, which I loved. I had to work backwards to find their older stuff and figure out that I'd heard a couple of early songs on the radio. XXX rocks and I like Rhythmeen as well. Favorite album? Probably Deguello. Xanadoood
Im pretty sure they are the longest running band with the same lineup. I always like the Top. Great blues based, boogie Rock. Their 70s stuff is just great six pack, barbecue music.
theredtamasrule
Yes. Major sellouts but, well, it worked for them. They are now a caricature of themselves, hokey and laughable but they sure don't have to worry about where the next meal is coming from.
Tick
ZZ Top Deguello was the last great ZZ Top album. El Locco was ok, but the tour was great. I saw them 3 times back in the day. Mtv ruined music for many years.

rushfanNlv
I'd have to say that they were just following the times with Eliminator. I say this because the songs are still just good old basic blues songs but they were put together using the new toys that were available to them. I think that a lot of the old school guys (Rush included) were just in awe with all this new technology and thought that these toys represented the future of music. These tools represented a new and easier way to do what they had been doing for years and in the early 80s, we were all into letting the computers do things for us. It seemed a natural progression. It's just a product of the times. Isn't it ironic though that the new rock bands (even the emo bands) are all guitar bass and drums? I mean we went through this whole alternative and then techno period where a computer was part of every track in one way or another and now we're back to the basics. treeduck
QUOTE (Earthshine @ Feb 20 2010, 01:15 AM)somewhat obscure Deguello. Deguello is one of their best albums, it rocks earthy!! Eliminator is cool too, but I've listened to it too much over the years. I really like Rhythmeen from 1996, excellent album...

A lot of people (especially young kids today) only know Legs, Give Me All Your Money, Tube Snake Boogie, beards, cars, etc. ZZ Top used to be a down home Texas band!
